These 5 Anime Are Better Than Their Reputation Would Lead You to Believe

Seriously, these aren’t that bad.

Sometimes, newer fans decide not to watch an anime because of its reputation in the anime community. However, that reputation can be misleading: many series aren’t as bad as they’re said to be. Here are 5 of them that are definitely overhated.

Sword Art Online

Over the years, Sword Art Online has amassed a huge amount of haters, and it might sometimes seem that it is one of the worst anime of all time. It’s all but that, though: the anime actually had a decent fanbase and influenced many series that came later.

Does SAO have flaws? Well, of course. The lows are really low, but the peaks are high, as well. The animation is really good, too, and SAO might not be amazing, but it certainly isn’t terrible.

Attack on Titan

Some fans believe Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) has been completely ruined by its finale. While the finale was controversial for sure, the people who thought it was the worst thing ever were simply a vocal minority.

For many, the finale wasn’t terrible — even if it could have been better, it certainly didn’t ruin the anime.

School Days

School Days has long been considered one of the worst anime ever. It’s definitely a trainwreck, although a very entertaining one. The ending is infamous (we won’t spoil it, if you still haven’t heard of it), but the entire anime is a love polygon focusing on a group of terrible people, with the protagonist being the worst of them.

You don’t go into School Days to root for any of the characters. It’s the kind of trainwreck you can’t stop watching, and although you might feel disgusted, it’s entertaining in its own right. Just get into the right mindset for it.

Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail is often criticized for being repetitive, low-stakes, and full of pointless fanservice. It seems that there’s absolutely no reason to watch it when other battle shounen series exist. However, being low-stakes is actually what makes it so different from other shounens.

If you want a lighthearted adventure focusing on a group of friends, where friendship is the central theme, Fairy Tail is what you might want to watch. The anime isn’t bad, it just requires a specific preference.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works

While Unlimited Blade Works is not hated per se, it is often considered inferior to the prequel series, Fate/Zero. Apparently, viewers like Kiritsugu’s cynical and nihilistic mindset more than Shirou’s idealism.

The thing is, these two go hand-in-hand and one is required to understand the other. Also, Unlimited Blade Works is still good by itself, even if you find the protagonist annoying. Studio ufotable really went all-out on that one when it came to animation.
