These 5 Anime Did Superpowers Better Than One Piece

These 5 Anime Did Superpowers Better Than One Piece

Not necessarily stronger, but definitely cooler.

Over the years, One Piece has introduced not one, but two different power systems: Devil Fruits and Haki. The latter, while visually impressive (if you can see it), is mostly a reiteration of Dragon Ball’s ki system, and the former…

Well, we’ve seen some pretty fun Devil Fruit fights, but their power system by itself feels pretty lackluster. And if you wanted a story with more interesting superpowers, we’ve got five for you.

Cursed Energy (Jujutsu Kaisen) is just more elegant

Cursed energy is wielded by both curses and sorcerers alike, and can be used for simple things — like punching harder with Black Flash — and for more personalized techniques, like Gojo’s Hollow: Purple and Megumi’s Ten Shadows — and even the incredibly powerful and cinematic Domain Expansions.

Sure, this power system is somewhat similar to Haki and Devil Fruits of One Piece — but it managed to combine the two into one, and that’s impressive.

Contracts (Chainsaw Man) — you can’t spell “faustian” without “f”, “u” and “n”

Devils are representations of human fears, and the more something is feared, the stronger its devil is. And some of these fears lend their power to humans for a price that can vary from nominal to absolutely horrifying.

Both devils and humans might have multiple contracts (or end them) — imagine if One Piece allowed people to switch Devil Fruits (without dying)!

Alchemy (Fullmetal Alchemist) is universally available

 - image 3

In Fullmetal Alchemist (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi), alchemy is a science, and could theoretically be learned and used by anyone, to do things both mundane (like reassembling a radio) to fantastical (like reassembling a mother, with a caveat).

Just like Devil Fruits, alchemy thrives off one’s creativity — except, you are only limited by your own understanding of the universe, and what you are willing to give in return. Everything comes at a price, after all. Speaking of…

Nen (Hunter X Hunter) makes you think

 - image 4

Nen is a technique that allows you to manipulate your own life energy. The basics are very similar to ki, but once you get into advanced techniques? Things get far more interesting — Nen users can create their own abilities with limitations they decide on as well. The more limited an ability, the more powerful it is — and obscuring your limitations while discovering your opponent’s is essential.

Nen fights are just as much battles of the mind as of the ability — it’s no wonder that one of the most powerful Nen combatants just emits an aura that possesses properties of both rubber and gum.

Stands (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) are just bizarre

In Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken), Stands are manifestations of their user’s fighting spirit. Each Stand has their own unique ability that can vary from Time Stop to Aging Aura to creating a tiny shark that can teleport between liquids, and under the right circumstances, even the weakest Stand is deadly.

Each Stand battle is a puzzle box, in which you have to figure out how to counter or find your opponent before their ability finishes you. And that’s something One Piece just doesn’t do.

Not necessarily stronger, but definitely cooler.
