  • Kafka and Kikoru started off on the wrong foot.
  • Everything changed when Kafka saved Kikoru.
  • Kafka and Kikoru have the potential to become great friends.

We have to be honest, we didn’t expect to fall in love with this many Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) characters so early, but the series knows how to be charming.

There are various character dynamics in Kaiju No. 8, but the best one for now is definitely the relationship between Kafka and Kikoru.

From Enemies to Friends

These two started like enemies. Their first encounter ended in a fight, since Kafka had parked his car in Kikoru’s lucky spot, so the girl just threw his car out of the spot and made Kafka angry. But it was just the beginning of their peculiar relationship.

Later, during the training episode, Kikoru was laughing at Kafka, she thought he was weak and ineffective. He became a class clown not only for her, but for the other trainees as well. That’s all Kafka was, a joke.

However, everything changed in Episode 4, when the exam went terribly wrong and Kikoru was in danger of being killed by a kaiju. This is where Kafka showed his heroic side, saving the girl and revealing his hybrid identity to her. And this is where the true beauty of this dynamic began.

Although Kikoru is still unsure whether Kafka can be trusted or not, she wants to believe the best. She promises to keep his secret and have some faith in him. The ice between them has started melting, and we see it in Kikoru’s thoughts and actions.

Kikoru doesn’t want the Defense Force to experiment on Kafka, and truly appreciates him for what he did. When she was praised for her accomplishments, she thought of Kafka and believed that he was the one who deserved the praise instead of her.

Which means that she’s not comfortable with receiving accolades instead of Kafka. No matter how little she thought of him in the past, a feeling of respect and gratitude began to blossom in her.

Fans compare Kikoru and Kafka’s relationship to one of a father and daughter. They fight and argue, but have respect for each other and there are definitely the first signs of actual care.

On top of that, we can’t forget how hilarious scenes get when they feature interactions between Kikoru and Kafka. Both of them bring a lot of humor into the series, and their encounters are just very entertaining to follow.

We sense some great friendship potential in Kafka and Kikoru’s relationship. They both have a lot to learn from each other, and we’re confident: their connection will make both of their lives much better.
