Was the series better before?
Do you remember the times when Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) was just about humanity fighting for its survival against hideous titans? Do you miss these times or are you happy with the way the story progressed? Let's try to analyze why the story went into a different direction and discuss how the fans feel about the outcome.
When you start watching Attack on Titan, you have a lot of questions, and the main one is probably "What the hell is happening?". Everything is a mystery: What are the titans? Where did they come from? Why are there titan shifters? How do their abilities work? And these are only the surface level questions; the series has this enigmatic vibe that glues you to the screen and makes you eager to find all the answers.
The end of season 3 gives you the satisfaction of having all of your questions answered. But now the viewers have to find out what happens next. Although the mysteries are solved, this doesn't bring us any conclusions; we understand what is happening now, but don't understand how the characters are going to deal with it.
And that's why we need the Marley conflict.
Most fans agree that the conflict of the first three seasons was more entertaining to watch.
The unknown factor was the driving force of the series and gathering hints of what was really going on and speculating on the events of the series brought immense joy to the viewers and made them highly invested in the story.
Some fans specifically mention the Female Titan and Battle of Shiganshina District arcs because they are the combination of everything that's made Attack on Titan so dear to us: frightening titans, phenomenal action, existential drama, mysteries being unveiled.
All of that fits into the picture of what the series is perfectly. But it doesn't mean that the final season is any less enjoyable.
All questions are meant to be answered in a good show, and Attack on Titan is undoubtedly a great one. However, it's not always enough to just give the audience the answers they've been longing for, you have to make a conclusion.
The Marley conflict and the rumbling that follows are this conclusion that was crucial for the story. Fans completely understand that and see the necessity for the final season. They also emphasize that everything that's happened after season 4 is just as fantastic as the previous events.
Both conflicts were essential for the story of Attack on Titan. Although having different vibes and goals, they remain engaging and entertaining. You are free to choose the one you are keen on more, but we're sure you can't deny that both of them are great.
