Elven supremacy?
Summary:
- Frieren and Marcille come from different types of series, but they are very alike.
- They are both elven mages, often used as comic relief.
- They are also examples of well-written female characters.
Last season it was Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) that brought us one of the best anime elves out there, and this season Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) decided to follow suit and introduced us to Marcille. What a time to be alive!
Frieren and Marcille are both incredible, and this statement doesn’t need any proof or evidence. We just know they are. But why are we even talking about them in the same context and how are they alike?
They’re both mages
This is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Frieren and Marcille. Despite their powers being on different levels (although we’re not entirely sure how strong Marcille really is for now), they do have their magic in common.
There’s also the elf part, of course that makes them resemble each other even more. Both have fair hair, pointed ears (duh, they’re elves) and a staff that they use to cast their magic.
Comic reliefs
Another thing is that both Frieren and Marcille provide the viewers with a lot of humorous moments.
Even though Frieren is not a comedy series, it still has its quirky and hilarious moments, and a lot of them are connected with the series’ main protagonist. Just think of all the moments when Frieren really wanted to sleep and Fern had to wake her up or force her to stay awake. Don’t lie, you smiled at least a little bit at that!
Or what about the moment when Frieren wanted to give Stark a peculiar elixir that could undress someone? Charming intention, but perhaps they shouldn’t?
And should we even say anything about Marcille and humor? Her fear and disgust when it comes to eating monsters doesn’t fail to be hilarious even after 4 episodes of the series, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy her suffering in an endearing way.
Good adult female characters
Unfortunately, the topic of well- or poorly-written female characters is still very hot nowadays, so we can’t help but notice each anime girl that has personality. And Frieren and Marcille are these girls, indeed.
They are both interesting, bright and vivid. We love listening to their stories and watching them interact with other characters. On top of that, they are not teenagers, which is also a rare thing in anime.
There’s still a lot to be explored about Marcille, but given all the attention that’s been put into Dungeon Meshi’s worldbuilding and storytelling so far, we’re sure we won’t be disappointed.
