Unpopular Opinion: Levi Should Have Died in the First Part of Attack on Titan Season 4

We know it’s cruel, but hear us out.

Summary:

  • A moment in the final season of Attack on Titan got fans worried for Levi’s fate.
  • Levi survived, but it would have been an interesting decision if he hadn’t.
  • Levi is one of the fan favorite characters and he couldn’t go like that.

Attack on Titan spoilers ahead!

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 15. Levi has captured Zeke, is torturing him and is about to cut off another limb when Zeke explodes himself and takes the captain with him. What a moment was that, huh?

The cruelest part of that was that both Isayama and MAPPA made the fans worry about Levi’s fate for months. The Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) manga was being released on a monthly schedule, and it was a good 10 chapters before we saw Levi again and found out that the man was alive. The first part of the final season of the anime ended with Episode 16, the one after the explosion episode, and made fans wait for the second part just to learn that their fave was alive. But what if he wasn’t?

Levi was never the same after that

That would be a much more interesting outcome. Relax, Levi stans, we do love Levi (very much, for that matter) and don’t want to say goodbye to him, either. However, his character hasn’t had any significant development after that moment. The only meaningful thing Levi managed to do was to kill Zeke and fulfill his promise to Erwin. Which was satisfying, of course, but imagine how hauntingly beautiful it would have been if he had never been meant to succeed. Cruel, but beautiful.

Some fans suggest that the man who came out of that explosion was not the true Levi. He was injured and broken. He lost a big portion of his personality and became even quieter. A couple of fans also claim that Levi became nothing more than a plot device, whose sole purpose was to kill Zeke. Although he still kept his astonishing combat abilities, he was never as brilliant as he once was. The deaths of Hange and Eren only scarred him more and caused him more pain. Levi keeps suffering over and over again, so wouldn’t it be better to spare him from that and just let him die?

Still, no one can deny that Levi is one of the most popular characters in the Attack on Titan series. He’s a regular on all “top favorite anime characters” lists. Such a beloved character couldn’t die like that, and Isayama probably understood that. No one wanted to see him die (including us), and yet it would be an interesting storytelling decision if he did.
