Vampire Dormitory Episode 1 Is Out: Watch or Skip?

Vampire Dormitory Episode 1 Is Out: Watch or Skip?

One thing is clear: the series has the dumbest plot twist ever.

Summary:

  • Vampire Dormitory has started airing.
  • Episode 1 plot twist surprised no one.
  • The series feels pretty generic, but might be enjoyable.

Vampire Dormitory is a fresh romance anime based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Ema Toyama. The series has already started airing, and Episode 1 was released on April 7, 2024.

The anime follows Mito, an incredibly handsome young man. He used to work at a restaurant, but his stunning appearance attracted too many women to the place, so the manager decided to fire him.

A series of events led Mito to the edge of a bridge where he wanted to end his life. However, a mysterious vampire saves him and takes him in.

Most Unbelievable Plot Twist

Vampire Dormitory would sound like a fantasy boys’ love romance, but there’s a catch. Mito turns out to be a girl, not a man. Sorry to disappoint you, fujioshi, this series is not for you.

Such a plot twist might have worked really well, since Mito’s gender was important for the plot: Ruka, the said vampire, cannot drink the blood of girls, so he’s chosen himself a man. But the series doesn’t even try to hide the truth, and it ruins the first impression significantly.

Mito looks like a girl. Perhaps the poster for the series could have fooled you if you weren’t inspecting it closely. But 10 seconds into Episode 1 and it’s clear: this is just a girl with short hair, there’s nothing manly about her.

Besides, Mito’s voice actress doesn’t even try to pretend to be a man. There’s just no doubt when you hear her voice: this is a woman speaking. That’s why watching the entire episode and hearing characters address Mito as “he” feels a bit frustrating and bizarre.

The finale of the episode tries to make a big deal out of this reveal, but fails miserably. The entire “plot twist” is just laughable.

A Nice Start

But apart from that, the series seems pretty enjoyable for now. There’s nothing new or impressive going on, we have to admit, but it’s a nice start that makes you want to learn more.

Fans say that Vampire Dormitory gives them some Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) vibes, and we can totally see where this sentiment comes from. It’s nowhere near this level of quality for now, though, but it’s still too early to say anything else.

There’s definitely hope for character development and Mito’s backstory. Fans are expecting some explanation as to why she’s been living as a man for this much time.

And we hope that the gender reveal will be a big deal later in the story, since Ruka said that girls’ blood is not really his thing.

One thing is clear: the series has the dumbest plot twist ever.
