Thorfinn was one of the least interesting characters in Season 1.
That made his development in Season 2 much more impactful.
There are more important things in the series than the story of one character.
While there are so many fans that absolutely love Vinland Saga and even consider it their favorite anime, there seems to be a common feeling in the fandom that the main protagonist is far from their top 10 reasons why they love the series. At least he wasn’t in Season 1.
Season 1 Thorfinn is pretty boring
Thorfinn used to be rather one-dimensional in the first season. He had one goal: to avenge his father by killing Askeladd, and he did everything he could to achieve that goal. There was nothing else going on with the character, he was uninteresting and bland.
Sometimes it didn’t really feel like he was the main protagonist at all, and some fans even think that Season 1 had two protagonists: Thorfinn and Askeladd, and almost all of them admit that the “villain” was much more interesting than the “good guy.”
This is not a case of bad writing in the slightest. Thorfinn was intentionally written like that. He had to be a stupid kid who knew nothing but an obsessive desire to get his revenge.
It made the rest of the story better
That’s why it’s so curious to see him grow in the second season of Vinland Saga. We’re used to Thorfinn being an angry, vengeful boy who knew and understood very little about the world he was living in.
Thorfinn had to be a boring shell of a character to transform into a great and wise man who has no enemies and who is trying to become better. Knowing how revenge was the core of his existence adds even more contrast to his current self.
Not to spoil anything from the manga, but we’ll just say that Thorfinn’s ideals will often get tested. He’ll be forced to come back to his old ways, and it’s so interesting to follow him and see how he deals with this. And it wouldn’t work if we didn’t see another side of him in Season 1.
Vinland Saga is notorious for its deep philosophy, and it’s not just a story of one character. The series tries very hard to make you understand that the world and the setting are much more important than any character.
It’s a story about a cycle of violence, about the cruelty of the world, and about morals that are constantly being tested. Everyone and no one is important in this world at the same time, and we had to see that there was nothing special about Thorfinn to realize that.
Who did you like better in Season 1?
It made the rest of the story much better.
