Villains are partly responsible for Jujutsu Kaisen's success.
Kenjaku appears unexpectedly in the series.
Very little is known about Kenjaku's motivations.
Villains are a very important element in Jujutsu Kaisen. They are partly responsible for the title's success. Without charismatic villains, the fights would be boring and one-sided. However, not all Jujutsu Kaisen villains are popular. It's unlikely that many people's answer to the question of what their favorite antagonist is will be Kenjaku. Nevertheless, he plays a major role in the story.
In fact, he can be considered the second most important villain after Sukuna. Since he will appear in the upcoming episode, it seems like a good time to talk about him.
So when did he show up?
Kenjaku appears unexpectedly in the series, in fact, we realize his presence very late. He reveals his identity at the moment of Gojo's imprisonment in the second season. Until then, it seems that Geto — Gojo's best friend — is behind all the misdeeds before and during Shibuya.
However, this character died before the first season's events, and his story is revealed in the Hidden Inventory Arc and the feature film Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Sounds confusing! Maybe that's why it was hard to understand the new villain's appearance. Everything comes together when we realize that Geto's body has been taken over by an ancient curse user. Kenjaku's character can be distinguished by a distinctive scar on his forehead.
Despite the fact that Kenjaku appears in the first season, almost nothing is known about him. Even his true appearance is not revealed — we are only shown his brain, which has teeth. What is known is that he is more than a thousand years old. His cursed technique allows him to use other people's bodies as vessels. And he uses not only their appearance but also the dead sorcerer's powers. Thus, Kenjaku can summon spirits just like Geto.
Strange decisions
Very little is known about this character's motivations. During the first season and the Shibuya Incident arc, he works with cursed spirits who want to create a world for curses. However, that does not seem to be his goal. He helped them seal Gojo, and after that he distanced himself.
Though this arc is full of battles, we haven't seen his power. He made a few more sporadic appearances after the Gojo scene, but there were no full-blown battles. The situation seems to change in episode 22, as he showed up at the end of the previous episode. There's nothing memorable about this character yet, and he's far inferior to the other villains. Even Geto, who also didn't get much screen time, seems to be a much more charismatic antagonist. Hopefully, Episode 22 will give us further details about Kenjaku.
