If you’re a Jujutsu Kaisen manga reader, the conversations about Gojo and his fate are not new to you. The man’s death caused the fandom to be so loud, that anime-onlys had to be very careful to avoid spoilers. This event has left a void inside of so many fans’ souls, and we have to admit that we’re among the grieving ones, too.
Gojo deserved better
A lot of people feel like Gojo didn’t deserve this treatment. And we’re not only talking about his death. The sorcerer was sealed for a long time, and it’s bad enough that Gege made us miss him during that time, but he decided to go even further than that and kill him mere chapters later. The last month of his life was off-screen, and we didn’t even get a chance to see more of him before his demise. On top of that, the reunion with Gojo’s students was skipped, which only adds to fans’ frustrations and dissatisfaction.
Gojo’s achievements are also pretty questionable. Everyone knows that he’s the strongest sorcerer and one of the strongest JJK characters ever, but it seems like it’s all in vain. He didn’t manage to defeat Sukuna. Don’t get us wrong, it’s fairly understandable since Yuji feels like the one who should get it done. But still! Gojo is incredibly powerful, so there was hope that he would at least cause some lasting damage to Sukuna and make him easier to beat in the future.
The list of failures keeps going. Gojo didn’t manage to kill Urame or Kenjaku, either. He failed to save Megumi, he couldn’t force Sukuna to use his cursed technique. A lot of Ls for someone this strong, don’t you think?
It’s not such a bad thing after all
Some think that it’s actually a very clever storytelling decision. Gojo is a type of character that has everything and yet can do nothing. It’s very ironic when such a great power is rendered useless.
Although Gojo is very important to the story of Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s not his fate to be the hero in the finale. Yuji is the main protagonist, after all, and it’s his job to be the center of it. Gojo has a different purpose: he’s there to make his students stronger. He’s said to be the best sorcerer in the series, but his students have to be even better to defeat Sukuna. And it’s impossible for them with Gojo in the picture. He limits them, and this limitation doesn’t allow them to reach their full potential.
So no matter how sad we are about the treatment of Gojo, we have to admit that it was necessary for the story and the idea of Jujutsu Kaisen.
