Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku) has already proven itself to be a worthy this year series and we've recently discussed it's storyline. However, the story itself is not the only thing fans love about this anime.
Despite claiming that Hell's Paradise won't probably blow your mind away, fans agree that the show seems very refreshing and intriguing. While speaking about this anime, viewers usually point out its great female characters, and that's not without a reason.
There have been countless complaints about the overall portrayal of women in the media. Girls used to be sexualized or presented to be shallow in the past a lot, and even now all types of series are packed with uninteresting "Mary Sues" with zero personality. But it looks like Hell's Paradise is not one of those cases.
Sagiri
Sagiri is one of the lead characters in the series, and she's a great example of a well-written female character. First of all, she's a samurai and an executioner, which is quite a surprising combination for a girl. Sagiri is serious and stoic, her high sense of duty is what drives her character. The girl is a skilled fighter, who is capable of standing comparison even to the strongest male warriors. Her calm demeanor, however, is not the only thing she has to offer.
Sagiri is not just an emotionless doll, ready to do as she's commanded, she's capable of bending the rules when needed and has a high moral code: having to kill someone is her greatest weakness, and the girl feels overwhelmed when she's forced to take someone's life.
Yuzuriha
Strong warrior type is not the only one present in Hell's Paradise. Yuzuriha is another great example of a female character. While we have to admit that this girl is sexualized, it doesn't stop us from falling for her. Having a seemingly cheerful and friendly demeanor, Yuzuriha is actually not that simple. Unlike Sagiri, this girl has no sense of duty; she's driven by her own motives and desires. Yuzuriha will not rush onto the battlefield unless there's something in it for her.
Another thing noticed by the fans is the main protagonist's treatment of women. Everything Gabimaru does, he does for the sake of reuniting with his wife again. He has immense love and respect for the women and is ready to go through hell just to see his wife again. She's the only thing that keeps Gabimaru alive and can influence his morality.
This respectful treatment of women in the show is not the only good thing about Hell's Paradise but it surely makes it more enjoyable to watch for the viewers. And, we dare say, not only female ones.
We love ourselves some strong female characters.
