We Can’t Help but Feel Upset That We Didn’t Get More Backstories on the Ackermans

We always want more.

Summary:

  • The Ackermans were one of the most interesting clans in Attack on Titan.
  • The series doesn’t provide much information about them.
  • It would be interesting to learn more about their backstory.

Although Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) has a great variety of complex and compelling characters, the Ackermans have always been a true mystery for the fandom. There have been various speculations and theories about them, and the fandom feels like there are still some unanswered questions left.

Humans as powerful as titans

The Ackerman clan is said to be a byproduct of Titan science. They are humans who possess a piece of the Titan power, and that’s why they’re so unstoppable when it comes to battle. Even before we found out that Levi and Mikasa were somehow related, the resemblance was striking: they are the most powerful soldiers capable of defeating any opponent. They don’t need to transform to become as strong as titans, they can stay human and show incredible strength. It’s clear from the story that they can even rival one of the 9 titan shifters. And even come a victor out of such a confrontation.

Levi and Mikasa’s relation is also unclear. Yes, we understand that they’re from the same clan, but how, why, when, and where? Who are they to each other truly? Are they distant relatives or are their fates more intertwined?

Ackermans were a bloodline of warriors that protected Eldia's king, which is understandable considering their abilities. But then how was it possible for the people to hunt Ackermans down and make them nearly extinct? Was there a coup or a conspiracy to deal with them? Such things would be extremely peculiar to see in the series.

Ackerman bond

The whole thing with the Ackerman bond also remains a mystery. It was said that all Ackemans were slaves that had to have a master. The king used to be their master, and that’s why such a powerful clan followed and protected him. That’s why Levi followed Erwin and Mikasa followed Eren. However, this theory was later disproved, stating that it was just a myth created by Eren to push Mikasa away. But the Ackerman bond would actually be cool!

Of course, for the Attack on Titan finale to work, Mikasa had to have genuine feelings for Eren and not just be a slave to her blood, but this “Twilight-style imprinting” would be very interesting to explore.

There is still some hope for the extra pages that will be released in 2024, as they are said to be about Levi. So some of the questions might get answered and we will find out more about this fascinating clan.
