And where is the promised sequel?
Yuri!!! on Ice is a sports anime released back in 2016, that follows a Japanese figure skater, Yuuri Katsuki, who used to be quite promising but now finds himself struggling with his career. However, an extremely talented and famous Russian skater, Victor Nikiforov, notices Yuuri after the man's video goes viral and offers him his mentorship. The younger skater agrees, and thus begins their training together.
The first season of the anime used to be exceptionally popular among the fans. It was one of those series that are impossible to have never heard of: everyone on social media was super excited, fanarts and fan videos were made, fanfiction was written, cosplay was created.
Fans seemed just obsessed. So when they were promised a sequel, everyone was extremely hyped. But the said sequel was never meant to be released.
Fans seem to be quite upset by this fact: they say they miss the anime dearly. Moreover, they are also genuinely surprised that Yuri on Ice was forgotten after all that hype. The viewers assumed that the anime did incredibly well due to tons of merch being sold, and the overall popularity of the project and its characters. Yuri on Ice wasn't a type of show that was trendy for a couple of months during its release and then disappeared in a blink. The hype stayed strong for years, and the fandom was flourishing.
What adds even more to the fans' frustration is the fact that a couple of clips ("Welcome to the Madness" and "Ice Adolescence") were released that hinted at possible season 2 or even a spin-off, and got the fandom super excited.
There were also some rumors about a YOI movie that was supposed to come out a couple of years ago. But nothing seems to come true.
Looks like fans agree that the best description of Yuri on Ice status is "stuck in production hell". Although truly hoping to ever see their beloved characters on their screens again, the fans seem to be losing faith.
Rumor has it that the CEO of MAPPA (the studio responsible for Yuri on Ice) mentioned the anime not bringing good money to the company, even despite its huge success. Yuri on Ice was one of the first big projects for the studio, so they were not entirely sure how to work with that success. They say, however, that this experience made MAPPA learn and revise their production and working strategy.
