Rengoku was very loved by the fans, and his death hurt them.
Most of them, though, wouldn’t want to change his fate a lot.
Some also fantasize about him surviving and finding peace.
So, Rengoku… This Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) character broke the hearts of hundreds of people. It’s been two years since his anime death, but we’re still not ready to forget about him.
Kyojuro Rengoku was the Flame Hashira, and this suited him incredibly well. Just like fire, he’s warm, full of energy and fierce and frightening on the battlefield. His enthusiasm was bright like flames, too, and his entire appearance made you feel comfy and protected. So losing him to Akaza was heartbreaking. This upsetting feeling got fans thinking about what could possibly be changed about his fate to make it better.
Changing nothing is also an option
One of the most common answers, surprisingly, is nothing. Rengoku was a great character and he met his demise with honor. He didn’t deserve to die, but if it had to come to this, then this is the best way: in battle with a worthy opponent. Even Akaza admitted that Rengoku was a great fighter, and praised his strength. He was surrounded by people who cared about him and he showed his best self during the Mugen Train Arc. Rengoku died respected and loved, and this is exactly the death he deserved. He also showed how big of a danger the Upper Moons possessed, so his death was crucial for the overall story.
More interactions
However, even if his death was meant to happen, there are a couple of alterations that would be nice. Fans suggest changing some things leading to Rengoku’s death or following it. They wish for more dialogs and interaction with other characters. If Rengoku had been more present in the story, his death would have had a much bigger impact. Besides, it’s upsetting that we found out about Mitsuri being some sort of his protégé from supplementary texts. How cool would it be if we saw them interact more?
There are also those who don’t want Rengoku to be dead, of course. They feel it would’ve been better if he never died. Major injuries had to occur, though, to show the strength of the Upper Moons, but killing him was unnecessary. Imagine him healing over time and retiring somewhere peaceful after the battle? Sounds out of character for super responsible Rengoku, but we can dream, right?
