When Is One Piece Remake Coming Out? Fans Are Already Speculating

Spoiler: Probably not anytime soon.

Summary:

  • Fans are speculating about the One Piece remake’s air date.
  • It’s unlikely to air this year.
  • There isn’t enough information to base further speculations on.

The recently announced Netflix-sponsored remake of One Piece — called “The One Piece” — is definitely one of the biggest (and most controversial) anime announcements of recent time.

While there are still arguments about whether the remake was needed in the first place, even those who don’t think it’s a good idea are curious about it. And, of course, there are already speculations on when it comes out — which is probably not happening anytime soon.

What we know right now

Right now, we barely have any information on the remake. There is no staff announced, and the early key visual hardly tells fans anything. The announcement trailer had Mayumi Tanaka returning to voice Luffy again — she is the seiyuu of the character in the original series as well. However, outside of that, we don’t know much.

The studio announced for the remake is Wit Studio — they are famous for animating the first three seasons of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) and the first season of Vinland Saga, among many others. That said, this is also a reason for concern: they usually don’t finish the adaptations they work on, with the anime being relegated to different studios.

The new anime is announced to restart the series from the very beginning — from the East Blue Saga — and is presumed to cover at least the entirety of that arc. We don’t know, however, if it will continue past that, but fans certainly hope so. After all, it would be pointless to readapt only the first part of the manga.

It’s not airing anytime soon

The lack of a proper key visual or any announced staff indicates that the remake is not airing anytime soon. It’s definitely not airing in 2024 — and probably not in the first half of 2025, either.

Usually, the anime airs roughly a year and a half after its first reveal — and it is normal to assume it has already spent some time in production at the point of initial announcement.

That said, some fans assume the anime is going to air even later than that. After all, for a project as huge as The One Piece it would make sense for the anime to be announced at its early stages of production. That might mean we won’t see the anime until 2026 or so.

To be fair, the remake airing later isn’t a bad thing. That would mean the studio will have more time to work on it, which usually results in better animation — a more modern take on the East Blue Saga is what people want.

To little information to speculate

As disappointing as it sounds, the real answer to “when is it going to air?” is “we don’t know yet.” It is very hard to speculate on it, given we have so little information. That doesn’t stop fans from making theories about the remake, and only time will tell which ones were actually correct.
