Which Is Better: Original Anime or Adaptations?

Which Is Better: Original Anime or Adaptations?

Seeing your favorite manga characters in animation or watching new stories?

Many released anime are based on a primary source in the form of manga, manhwa or other works, but there are also a considerable number of anime that have an original story invented by the authors directly for further adaptation. So is it possible to say for sure that one is better than the other?

Adaptations have their pros and cons, just like the original stories. The first advantage of the adaptation is that the story is already known to fans and has been tested by time; the title already has its own fan base that will support the release of the anime, which is good for the studio. Also, for those viewers who are not familiar with manga, a good adaptation can spark an interest in the work as a whole. At the same time, this plus can turn into a minus for the adaptation, since fans will naturally compare the source material to the anime, and if the fans don't like the adaptation, it can play a cruel joke on the title.

In turn, the original anime, such as Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, Akudama Drive for example, initially did not have a dedicated fan base, but thanks to the fact that the authors of the story did a good job, these anime also gained no less popularity and recognition than if they were adaptations.

Moreover, when adapting a manga, anime creators know in advance all the plot twists and several arcs ahead, and sometimes even the ending, and can build the correct narrative flow within the anime.

However, this also has its drawback, because the pace of the story in the manga does not always match the pace of events in the anime, therefore, if manga is not finished, then the adaptation overtakes the story in the primary source and begins to go in a different direction.

As a striking example, we can recall the first adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist, or the Naruto adaptation, where a lot of filler was added between episodes of the main story in order to wait for the release of new manga chapters.

In this regard, original anime have a greater advantage, since the anime authors themselves know what will happen next, they can decide by themselves where the story will develop in the future and they do not need to wait for anyone or anything.

In addition, in the original anime, the element of intrigue is retained more, since in the adaptation we know in advance what to expect, whereas in the original story, the viewer never fully understands where this or that plot twist may lead.

So both the original anime and the adaptation have their pros and cons, so only the viewers can decide which one they like more.
