Why Are Black Butler Public School Arc Trailers Hiding Sebastian?

Why Are Black Butler Public School Arc Trailers Hiding Sebastian?

New trailer, old complaint.

Summary:

  • There has been little to no Sebastian in all of the Public School trailers.
  • It might be connected to fans’ dissatisfaction with his design in the first trailer.
  • CloverWorks may be just playing with fans and hiding Sebastian for fun.

There’s a bit over two weeks before Black Butler: Public School Arc (Kuroshitsuji: Kishuku Gakkou-hen) airs on April 13, 2024, and the feeling of excitement is becoming more and more prominent. It’s been a while since we’ve seen our beloved Ciel and Sebastian animated, so the hype is real.

No Sebastian in the trailers

However, seeing only one of them animated is exactly the issue that concerns so many fans. A new Black Butler trailer was released on March 24, and Sebastian is missing again. This is getting ridiculous!

Unlike the previous trailer, there are a couple of hints at Sebastian, though. First of all, there’s a frame with him putting his hand on his chest and bowing (to Ciel?). There’s no face, head, or even the rest of his body, but it’s clear: this is fan-favorite demon butler.

On top of that, the trailer ends with the most exciting and goosebump-causing “Yes, my Lord” in Sebastian’s voice. So there’s no doubt: the butler will be very present in the upcoming season. And it’s obvious; there can be no Black Butler without either Ciel or Sebastian.

Still, this is where the Sebastian hype ends. There are no other visuals of him, and the last time we saw him in the new studio’s style was when the Public School was first teased and then on a couple of key visuals. What’s up with that?

The studio is toying with the fans

The most frightening thought that anime-onlys may have is that there will be little Sebastian in the Public School Arc. But manga readers ask them not to worry: he will be there. As usual, by Ciel’s side. The arc is more Ciel-focused, of course, but no one is going to forget about the demon butler, no worries.

That’s why it’s so frustrating that CloverWorks refuses to show fans more of Sebastian. It’s less than a month before the release, why can’t we see one of the key characters of the series?

When Sebastian was teased in an official trailer back in July 2023, fans had mixed feelings about his new character design. Something felt off, and they were upset that one of the hottest anime men ever just didn’t look that appealing anymore.

That’s why there’s an idea that CloverWorks wants to keep Sebastian a mystery for as much as they can. Perhaps they don’t want fans to be talking about the character design anymore before they see the finished project.

But the most true-to-life idea is that the studio is just toying with the fans. They know pretty well how much the fanbase adores Sebastian, and want to make us wait and speculate a little bit more. Cruel, but clever, we have to admit.
