Why Baccano! Deserves A Live-Action Adaptation

Baccano! is perfectly suited for a live-action movie or TV show.

After numerous failed attempts at adapting anime and manga to live action, Netflix has finally broken the curse with the latest One Piece TV series. The critically acclaimed show has drawn in millions of viewers. There’s another anime that has the potential to translate into live-action very well in the right hands: Baccano!

The 2007 mystery thriller by studio Brain's Base has all the elements of a must-see movie or TV show: the compelling story, the great plot twists, and an excellent cast of characters.

Setting & Cast

Baccano! is mostly set in a fictional version of the United States during the Prohibition era and is told from the point of view of multiple characters. It introduces us to immortal alchemists, mafia families, various outlaws from thieves to assassins, and other diverse characters.

Since the potential live-action show would take place in the US, casting directors would not need to limit the talent pool to Asian actors only. The melting pot of characters would allow for full inclusivity within the cast.

The anime is renowned for its rich, multi-layered storytelling and a complex plot. Given the popularity of thrillers with a twist like Inception, Interstellar, and Shutter Island, Baccano! would be the perfect candidate to pitch to some bigwig in Hollywood. Plus, it doesn’t have any scenes that would be too challenging to film.

The anime is considered a cult classic and a sleeper hit both in Japan and among international anime fans. Not much would need to be changed plot-wise in order to bring the story to life. Besides, the light novels by Ryohgo Narita that served as the basis for the anime are still regularly coming out, so the story could be turned into a long-running series.

Music

The original jazzy, funky, lo-fi soundtrack by Makoto Yoshimori is fantastic as it is, but imagine if the show producers could get their hands on some classic recordings? After all, the ‘30s were the golden era of jazz and swing, with titans like Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller dominating the scene with their sweet tunes.

A premise like this provides endless possibilities to sculpt another iconic live-action adaptation. Baccano! should be an easy sell to Hollywood producers or Netflix higher-ups, as this mind-bending rollercoaster of an adventure features enough fun dialogue, gunfights, and chaos to be entertaining all the way through.
