Why Does Chainsaw Man Manga Part 2 Feel Like a Downgrade?

Why Does Chainsaw Man Manga Part 2 Feel Like a Downgrade?

It feels like even the manga readers don’t really talk about it anymore.

Manga spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Chainsaw Man manga has been losing popularity for a while.
  • Almost every fan favorite character dies in the manga.
  • Jujutsu Kaisen also suffers from a similar problem of killing off too many characters.

Many fans who have been following Chainsaw Man manga for a while have complained about the latest arcs being more of a downgrade. In general, there’s less discussion online about the manga than there has been before the anime aired.

Despite the anime supposedly boosting the popularity of the series, it seems that not many people are interested in the manga nowadays — and if you’ve read it, you probably already understand why.

Most of the original cast has been killed off

One of Chainsaw Man’s main strengths has always been its interesting cast of weird and often downright crazy characters. Pretty much all of them had their fans, and readers hoped to see more and more of them.

Unfortunately, the world of Chainsaw Man is cruel. That means that at some point, characters are going to die. What ended up happening, however, is that Fujimoto killed off so many characters in his own series that it honestly became hard to care about the manga.

By the second part of the manga, pretty much every character in the series has died — and some of them even died twice (Reze). Pretty much everyone who was introduced in the first season of the anime has already died in the manga — which is going to be a shock for the anime-only viewers, but… it doesn’t really make for a good story.

The only major character from the early arcs who survived to Part 2 is Denji himself, so if you were reading the manga for other characters, you probably found it hard to read when pretty much everyone ended up dead. And new cast members don’t really feel the same — you won’t find much fanart or discussions of them.

There exists a similar problem in Jujutsu Kaisen

Funnily enough, Chainsaw Man isn’t the only manga that feels this way to its readers. Another huge recent hit, Jujutsu Kaisen, suffers from the exact same issue: the Shibuya Incident and the Culling Game arcs have killed so many fan-favorite characters that it became hard to care about the series.

On the one hand, it’s understandable why so many characters die — the worlds of both Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man are extremely cruel. Any mistake can get you killed, and these deaths often serve as shocking plot twists for the readers/viewers.

That said, it can get a little bit overbearing: why read the manga if everyone will end up dead anyway?
