Why Is Land x Übel Such a Popular Ship Among Frieren Fans?

Why Is Land x Übel Such a Popular Ship Among Frieren Fans?

To be fair, they’re practically made for each other.

Spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • After the First-Class Mage Exam arc, the Land x Übel ship started getting popular.
  • They’re opposites of each other, which makes their dynamic perfect.
  • Fans hope they get more screen time together later.

Despite Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren) not being a romance series, there are quite a lot of characters with certain romantic tension between them. Fern and Stark are perhaps the most notable example, and Himmel’s love for Frieren plays a huge role in the series as well.

However, one of the ships that has been gaining popularity recently is Land x Übel. At first, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, considering both of them are supporting characters in the First-Class Mage Exam arc. However, the ship is actually pretty interesting, and fans liking it makes perfect sense.

They had plenty of interaction during the exam

Both Land and Übel were in Fern’s team during the first stage of the exam. They had plenty of time to interact (although this was mostly one-sided flirting from Übel), although they did get separated later.

However, Übel continued to follow Land into the second stage of the exam, which was somewhat annoying to him.

Both of them passed the exam, and Übel continued to follow Land after that, with him reluctantly accepting the fact. While there’s still no active romantic relationship between them, they’re clearly interested in each other.

Being complete opposites is what makes their dynamic so good

Both characters in the ship are pretty popular. Übel is one of the fan favorites, with her powerful ability and a screwed sense of morality — she’s not exactly evil, but she still shows some crazy and outright sociopathic tendencies.

Land is calm and collected, often feeling very distant. Ironically enough, “distant” in this case might as well be used literally — the entire time we’ve seen him on screen, he’s been using clones.

He’s been exposed by Serie in the last episode, which also revealed to us that he’s been sitting in his village the entire time. Still, Serie passed him for how practical (and bold) his approach was.

Übel and Land are complete opposites — and that’s what makes their dynamic so great. Übel forces Land to get out of his shell and actually interact with others, and Land is one of the few people who can withstand Übel’s craziness.

They’re practically made for each other, and Übel’s teasing attitude meeting Land’s stoic demeanor leads to many exciting interactions.

Fans hope the relationship develops later

While both of the characters were introduced in the First-Class Mage Exam arc, we might not see them in a while (given a sequel eventually happens).

That said, fans say that they come back in the manga at some point, and fans are excited to see their relationship develop into something.

Do you think Land x Übel is a good ship?
