Why is No One Talking About Netflix’s Pluto Anymore?

Why is No One Talking About Netflix’s Pluto Anymore?

Where did all the hype go?

Summary:

  • Pluto used to be very hyped back in October 2023.
  • The excitement faded away pretty quickly.
  • The release strategy and other Fall series impacted Pluto a lot.

Remember October 2023 when Pluto was released on Netflix and numerous anime websites (including yours truly) praised it for its incredible story and lively characters? Some journalists and reviewers didn’t even shy away from calling it “Best anime of 2023”. So why is no one really talking about it anymore?

Pluto’s success can be compared to a burning match: it was sudden and very bright, but didn’t last long. There’s no doubt that Pluto was one of the best premieres last season, and its story is phenomenal and extremely heartbreaking at times.

The first episode alone is capable of making you feel all sorts of things. It didn’t even matter that each episode was 40+ minutes long, the time was well spent.

So what happened?

One of the things that may have caused the Pluto hype to fade so fast was the release strategy for the series, we think. Netflix released all of the episodes at once on October 26, and the most devoted fans were able to finish the entire series in one day.

While this strategy is wonderful for those who hate waiting for new episodes and detest ongoing series for making them impatient, it has its disadvantages.

It was fun talking about Pluto when it was still fresh. Like for a week or even a month, but after everyone had finished it, there was nothing to talk about anymore.

So if the series was being released an episode per week, it would have ended only in December, and it would still be pretty relevant now in January. Perhaps not as much as the currently airing series, but still more.

Other series are also to be “thanked” for the lack of hype around Pluto now, of course. First of all, we can’t forget Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren that became the real stars of Fall 2023. They outshined all other anime series and dominated the anime spaces.

It’s still good

That doesn’t mean Pluto is completely irrelevant now. It’s still rather fresh and no one can deny that it’s a masterpiece, so if you haven’t watched it yet and don’t want to now, months after people stopped caring about it, that’s a mistake. It’s still worth a try, and we’re confident you won’t be disappointed.

It’s upsetting that such an anime doesn’t get the attention it deserves because it’s truly amazing. But perhaps it was just meant to be another hidden gem that we’ll be remembering with a bittersweet feeling years later
