The fact that it will be by J.C.Staff doesn’t mean it’s going to be a disaster.
Summary:
- Fans are upset about One Punch Man S3 being animated by J.C.Staff.
- The situation with S2 is more the fault of upper management than the actual animators.
- The studio actually has some great works under its belt, and the production was never going to match the level of S1 anyway.
Many fans are upset that the third season of One Punch Man is going to be animated by J.C.Staff. We can’t really blame them: the studio doesn’t exactly have the best track record with the show — they were responsible for S2, which many fans disliked for being a visual downgrade from S1.
Obviously, some fans went as far as to dismiss the third season already for being a failure — despite only a small snippet of the series being revealed in the PV.
That is a huge overreaction — there’s a reason why S2 of One Punch Man looked like that, and there’s no indication that S3 will be just as bad (or worse). It’s still possible, but we can’t judge the anime based on the studio alone — especially in this case.
S2 looking much worse
The production of One Punch Man S2 was surrounded by a series of unfortunate circumstances. The director of the original, Shingo Natsume, was already busy with the 2019 adaptation of Boogiepop and Others (Boogiepop wa Warawanai).
Allegedly, the production committee couldn’t schedule the anime with him or the studio of S1 (Madhouse) properly, and the only studio that agreed to take the anime on was J.C.Staff.
Unfortunately, at that point, J.C.Staff was already busy with multiple other projects, including the movie for KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!).
As a result, the anime they were given that weren’t initially supposed to be animated by them suffered in quality. One Punch Man S2 didn’t even get the worst treatment — it was still fine, especially compared to Date A Live S3 and Food Wars! (Shokugeki no Souma) S3.
Ultimately, S2 being a downgrade in art was just a result in a chain of unfortunate decisions and circumstances. It was Chikara Sakurai’s second role as a solo director, and his previous work was an ecchi comedy. In the end, it seems that One Punch Man S2 didn’t get the top-tier team fans wanted it to get.
It was never going to be as good as S1
Arguably, the first season set the standards too high. It was basically a miracle production, and it’s not the director’s achievement alone: assembling the same animation team was impossible anyways. Fans were expecting something they weren’t going to get anyway.
There’s way too little information now about S3 of OPM. We don’t know the date — or the director — just the studio and the trailer. You can’t really blame J.C.Staff for not having done any great works (although you can blame the management for agreeing to take on OPM S2 without sufficient resources).
The studio proved itself to be capable of having great animation with anime like A Certain Scientific Railgun (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun) and KonoSuba movie.
They also are a huge studio with a lot of employees, and they outsource a lot as well — we really can’t know how the S3 of One Punch Man will end up. Perhaps you should wait and see it for yourself before judging it.
