Will Kaiju No. 8 Be the New Solo Leveling of Spring Season 2024?

It has all the signs of becoming a new hit series.

Summary:

  • The series looks very promising at the moment.
  • It has the chance to become the best new anime of the season.

Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) is a fresh and currently airing anime series based on the manga of the same name by Naoya Matsumoto. It started airing on April 13, 2024, and Episode 2 was released a couple of days ago.

The anime follows Kafka, a 32-year-old man working as a sweeper, a person who takes care of monster remains after they’ve been defeated by the Defense Corps.

Kafka’s life changes when one of the monsters, or kaiju, forces its way in through his mouth and turns him into a kaiju, too.

Although there are only two episodes of Kaiju No. 8, the series looks extremely promising. It might have a pretty typical shounen exposition and some tropes that we’ve seen plenty of times before, but there’s a certain charm in the series that makes it a truly enjoyable experience.

There were some concerns about the character design after the first couple of trailers and visuals, since, let’s be honest, everyone loves looking at attractive characters. But the series makes you want to forget about these worries and just enjoy the story.

Anime of the Season

A number of fans called it long ago: Kaiju No. 8 would become the anime of the season. Something like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and The Apothecary Diaries were in Fall 2023, and like Solo Leveling was last season, in Winter 2024.

Of course, there are a lot of returning series this season, and a lot of fans are more interested in Mushoku Tensei Season 2 right now than Kaiju No. 8, but it’s always easier with sequels, since they already have a pretty big fanbase. That’s why we won't count them in this case.

It’s still unclear whether Kaiju No. 8 will be as successful and popular as Solo Leveling was last season, but there are already signs of that. The anime has great reviews and scores (8.26/10 on MyAnimeList), a big number of people take part in weekly episode discussions, and viewers praise the series for its vibe and quality.

The promotion for Kaiju No. 8 is also great. The series’ OP and ED are by internationally recognized musicians, OneRepublic and Yungblud, and it’s being streamed on X (formerly Twitter), which is amazing for attracting even more attention and viewers to the anime.

For now, Kaiju No. 8 has all the chances to become the real king of the season, and if the quality of the adaptation stays the same, we’re sure it will be getting more and more popular each week.
