Will There Be Re:Zero S2 Director's Cut Before the Next Season Comes Out?

Spoiler: probably not.

Summary:

  • Re:Zero fans are wondering if S2 will get a director’s cut before the broadcast of S3.
  • The director doesn’t even work at the studio anymore.
  • Season 2 episodes can’t be edited the same way.

With Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) getting another season in the fall, fans are looking back at the series and the content it got over the years.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the franchise was the director’s cut of the first season, released just before Season 2 came out. As such, fans wonder if something like that is going to happen before Season 3.

What was Re:Zero S1 Director’s Cut?

The director’s cut for Re:Zero S1 sparked many discussions in the fandom. It had some minor dialogue and animation changes, but, most importantly, it edited the anime into 13 double-length episodes. Compare that to the original release format, which was 25 episodes — of which all but the first one were the normal length.

This, of course, made fans argue about which experience is better — standard or director’s cut. Both sides present some valid arguments, but also, both ultimately agree that you can really watch either.

The only major difference between the two versions is that the director's cut adds a new scene at the end of the last episode — and that’s also the first scene of the second season anyway.

Why it wouldn’t happen

Now, fans wonder if the second season will get a director’s cut as well. On paper, that sounds completely possible; however, there are many signs pointing to the fact that it won’t actually happen.

First of all, the director’s cut of the first season was broadcast right before Season 2 came out. It’s quite late for the anime to announce such a project, considering time slots on TV are usually booked in advance.

Moreover, the director of the first two seasons is not going to direct the third one as he left the studio. However, the new studio he works at is still credited in the series — still, this probably means that we’re not getting an edited version of the second season.

The most noticeable problem, however, is that it’s pretty much impossible to edit the second season into a S1-like director’s cut. The second season has 25 episodes (13 in Part 1, 12 in Part 2). None of them are double-length, and there would have to be cuts or multiple new scenes to fit the format — which isn’t going to happen.

There technically is enough extra content (many episodes were slightly longer than usual), but making completely new cuts and scene transitions would be problematic. Fans just have to admit this: a director’s cut of Season 2 is probably not happening.
