For many fans, Yuji doesn’t feel like the main character in his own story. Will this perception ever change?
Spoiler alert!
Satoru Gojo is undoubtedly a fan favorite within the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, consistently ranking in the top 3 in popularity polls and outshining the main character, Yuji Itadori. Many consider him to be the “face” of the series. So, what does Yuji lack and will he be able to make it to the pantheon of Shonen Jump’s most recognizable protagonists along with the likes of Naruto and Luffy?
Anime watchers first met Yuji Itadori in 2021. In season one of Jujutsu Kaisen, he is introduced as an ordinary high school student without much personality to his name. Early on, his motivation is established as staying true to the promise he made to his dying grandpa: to protect everyone around him no matter what. Again, this is hardly an original concept for a shonen protagonist.
Even after he swallows the demon’s finger and the main action kicks off, Yuji does not discover any special skills or abilities. The demon living inside of him is more of a hindrance rather than an untapped source of power. Yuji is essentially set up to be an “athletic guy fighting curses”, so it’s hardly surprising that many viewers find it hard to get attached to this character.
With his playful attitude and eccentric behavior, Gojo provokes stronger emotions from the start. As the most powerful jujutsu sorcerer in the series, he is so hard to ignore that the mangaka himself decided to remove him from the equation for some hundred chapters. With Gojo locked up, other characters started to slowly but steadily gain their own faithful fanbases.
Yuji, of course, is no exception. He has gained some popularity thanks to his growth and development during Shibuya and the following arcs in manga, and we can expect another wave of fans after the anime catches up with these events. Even so, as per the last popularity poll, Yuji has now been overshadowed (no pun intended) in popularity by another protagonist in the story, Megumi.
Perhaps if Yuji unlocks some unique techniques and reveals more “raw”, vulnerable sides of himself to the audience, he will win the favor of fans. Will it be enough to surpass Gojo, Megumi, and other beloved characters in the story? It’s hard to predict.
Ultimately, whether Yuji will go down in history as one of the greats will depend on how the mangaka concludes his story arc, as well as the lasting impact and reception of the series as a whole.
