Zom 100 Might Have Been Disappointing, but the Premiere Was Amazing

The rest of the anime never lived up to it.

Summary:

  • Zom 100 is considered a disappointing anime now, but the premiere was amazing.
  • It looked great and provided the viewers with reasons to care about the main character.
  • Ultimately, fans have set their expectations too high.

One of the most promising anime of 2023 was Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto). An absolutely breathtaking premiere, combined with a premise that promised a new take on the zombie apocalypse genre, made fans expect a lot from the anime.

Unfortunately, the series ended up a huge disappointment, and by the time it ended, practically no one was talking about it. People only talked about how inconsistent its schedule was and how it never lived up to the expectations. Still, the first episode was amazing, and it deserves some credit at least for that.

The Premiere Was Amazing

The first episode of Zom 100 wasn’t just amazing — it was arguably the best premiere of the season. That’s actually an achievement, considering it aired in Summer 2023, a season where Jujutsu Kaisen S2 started airing. Still, Zom 100 showed that a new studio can make amazing animation, too — the series blew up and made many people hyped.

The animation in the first episode was amazing, and we very rarely see such production values from new projects that weren’t even supposed to be big. Yet somehow, the first episode showed how much the staff team behind the anime cared about it.

To be fair, in the manga, there’s quite a few not-so-subtle jabs at the Japanese work culture (and generally, corporate workers are compared to zombies). In the anime, these jabs are calling out OLM, the studio which some staff members previously worked for, and they show not-OLM as a “black company.”

It’s not just about the animation. The first episode is a total emotional rollercoaster, showing how much the world transformed after a zombie apocalypse. It also shows Akira’s story, establishing his point of view, and makes the viewer relate to him — he’s stressed, experiencing burnout, and suddenly, his life takes a completely different turn.

Why It Was Disappointing

In fact, some fans argue that the first episode’s success was what made the anime so disappointing. The rest of the episodes were nowhere near as good, and fans have set their expectations too high. The animation became worse — it still was good, but it wasn’t amazing anymore.

The anime also became more generic, often including rather poorly timed comedy. In the end, it wasn’t a refreshing take on the zombie genre everyone expected. Besides, huge breaks between episodes (turns out the production within the studio wasn’t smooth at all) made many lose interest.
