5 Anime Where We Wanted Side Characters to Be the Leads

We just love them a little bit more.

The main character is often the most important part of an anime, and this is a very obvious thing to say. But what if the lead doesn’t really do it for you and you’d rather another character was the focus of the story?

  1. The Future Diary (Mirai Nikki)

No offense to Yukiteru fans, but the guy is rather annoying. Especially at the beginning of the series where all he can do is cry and wait for Yuno to come up with a clever idea of saving him.

But what if Yuno was the one we were following? Let’s admit it, she’s the reason we started watching the series, and she steals the show due to how absolutely insane and eccentric she is. It would certainly be curious to experience the story from her perspective.

  1. Tokyo Revengers

Fans don’t even care who would replace Takemichi, they just want him replaced. Weak cowardly protagonists with low self-esteem have never been popular among shounen fans because what is there to relate to?

On top of that, manga readers say that Takemichi doesn’t get much better and remains his annoying self up until the very disappointing finale of the series. So let’s just pretend that Mikey is the main protagonist, and call it a day.

  1. Naruto

It’s not like Naruto is that bad, but after some time fans were just exhausted with his inspirational speeches and his desire to save Sasuke. This fixation of his stopped being amusing at some point, and let’s just admit it: he was never the most interesting character in the series.

Fans suggest Kakashi, Itachi or even fan favorite Jiraya as candidates for the main protagonist instead, and think that it would be awesome to learn more about their stories.

  1. Jujutsu Kaisen

Let’s make it clear: Yuji is wonderful. Still, there are a lot of fans that feel like he’s an underwhelming character. There’s nothing truly special about him, he just punches things and looks cool while doing so.

We understand that he had to start as no one to become great later, but can’t help but wish to see what the story would look like if Yuta was the main protagonist instead.

  1. Death Note

We know the entire point of the series is having a villain as the main protagonist, but fans love L so much that they just want more of him. Light stans, don’t be angry, put those death notes away, please.

It would just be extremely curious to experience the story from L’s perspective and go even deeper into his thought process. It wouldn’t work for the story the way it is but it would be truly interesting to explore this route.
