Openings are usually meant to give you an idea of what the series is going to be like. And most of the time they indeed do this job well. But there are times when openings give you an absolutely wrong impression, and these ones are exactly like that.
Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk)
The first opening of the anime gives off the cutest slice-of-life comedy vibes promising you a taste of romance and positivity. The cheerful soundtrack only makes this feeling stronger, and you’re sure: you’re about to witness something wholesome.
And then you start watching the actual anime and understand that the opening was just toying with you, and there isn’t even any romance in the series.
Remember the good times back in Season 1 when you had no idea what the Shibuya Incident was and how many of your favorite characters would die in the most upsetting way?
Junpei’s storyline was heartbreaking, but the opening made it even crueler by showing the boy wearing the Jujutsu High uniform and sitting alongside Yuji and the others. We really let the opening make us think that Junpei would survive, what a mistake!
For a series with so much death, suffering and personal trauma, the opening is a little bit too cheerful. Characters are dancing, drinking and having fun, accompanied by a dynamic soundtrack.
The entire thing feels like a vivid introduction to a fun slice-of-life series about characters’ adventures at a bar. But boy, would you be wrong to trust it.
Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister! (Oniichan wa Oshimai!)
This time the opening is more unhinged than the actual anime. When you watch it for the first time, without knowing anything about the series, you may find all those camera angles on the little girls… disturbing.
But fans say there’s nothing to worry about, and the anime itself is pretty wholesome and doesn’t look problematic at all.
This series is extremely good at pretending to be something it’s not, and the opening is no exception. If you watch it out of context, you’ll think it’s going to be an adventure fantasy. And, well, it is, but it’s also one of the darkest and most problematic anime you can find.
It does have its wholesome moments, too, but it’s also full of horror, trauma and torture. While the openings decided to focus only on the positive things.
They lied to us!
