If there is one issue with shounen anime, it’s that they often get too convoluted and polarizing near the end. This happened to Naruto and Bleach, this happened to Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) — the ending of which was particularly controversial. Right now, it’s happening to the manga of Jujutsu Kaisen.
These cases aside, here are five shounen anime which actually didn’t fall off near the end.
Perhaps the poster child of great battle shounen anime, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is considered by many the best anime of all time. It’s a faithful adaptation of an already beloved manga, and while the 2003 anime is a classic, its finale — being anime-original — is somewhat controversial.
Brotherhood fixes that by adapting the manga ending flawlessly. It was already a great manga all the way through, and the anime elevated it to the “best of all time” contender.
Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu) also adapts the manga in its entirety. The anime might sound weird from the premise, but if you stick with it, you’ll actually get a lot of complex characters and emotional moments.
The ending in particular is really touching and bittersweet — one of the best in shounen anime for sure.
Okay, technically, the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken) manga is still ongoing. Currently, it’s on its 9th part, with only 6 of them being adapted. It is running in a seinen magazine — but the adapted parts were all shounen.
While they’re not standalone, each part features a separate conclusion — and somehow, every single one of them has a great ending. Yes, sometimes it takes a while to get there, but the last arcs of JoJo are usually some of the best within each part.
The ending for Hunter x Hunter anime is very good. In fact, it is so good that even the mangaka considers it a good stopping point for the entire series — understandably so, considering we probably won’t get a conclusion in the manga anytime soon.
While some arcs in the anime are more polarizing than others, overall, it is consistently good all the way through.
Gintama keeps getting more and more content, but the main story ended with the Final movie. Many fans felt that it was a perfect way to end the anime.
Essentially, the series has two sides — a comedic one and a serious one. The former can be continued endlessly, while the latter has been concluded the exact way fans wanted.
It’s actually not that easy to find one.
