As October 31st approaches, take a look at some anime that might be a good idea to watch in preparation for this Halloween.
Another
In Another, a class is cursed. Many are susceptible to the curse, not just the students; their families are also in danger. As death starts to strike, the characters struggle to figure out why they are cursed and how to stop it. It is a relatively bloody anime with a lot of on-screen deaths. You have been warned.
Not very bloody but quite, quite spooky, Soul Eater is about a school that trains people (and not quite people) to fight evil. There is a bit of comedy and slice-of-life sprinkled in, but it’s also an action anime with battles between the characters and monsters. The characters are all very unique and interesting, and the plot is good, but do keep in mind that there are scares, and they are no joke.
Elfen Lied is about mutants who are called Diclonii (Diclonius for one entity). These mutants develop long transparent arms called “vectors,” which can slip through objects and, of course, slice people to ribbons. This anime is fairly bloody, so keep that in mind. There is also quite a bit of human experimentation and other forms of abuse. The plot follows a Diclonius, who suffers from memory loss and is then found by locals. They take her in, unaware of the sheer amount of violence she would bring into their lives.
When They Cry
In When They Cry, a series of inexplicable deaths and disappearances occur in a small village, the main characters attempt to solve these occurrences, which seem to be connected to the village’s festival. The anime can be considered a mystery horror, which tackles madness and paranoia, and the deaths are diverse, often explicitly horrific.
Interviews with Monster Girls
For a change, this anime is hardly horror, but it is about a new take on the supernatural genre. It is a fantasy and a comedy about demi-humans being interviewed by a biology teacher. No unethical experimentation here; everything is consensual. Demi-humans are diverse, from succubi to snow women (yuki-onna), which makes the goal of studying them especially complex. This non-horror anime is here not only because the rest of the anime are not pure horror either; it is to remind you that even if you don’t like horror, you can enjoy anime this Halloween. And it will even have a supernatural twist!
Whether you prefer horror anime or would rather not touch them, there is anime for you to enjoy this Halloween.
