Childhood Friend or First Love: What is the Best Choice for A Sign of Affection’s Yuki?

Childhood Friend or First Love: What is the Best Choice for A Sign of Affection’s Yuki?

Which one do you root for?

Summary:

  • Some fans suggest that Oushi would be a better romance option for Yuki than Itsuomi.
  • Itsuomi’s behavior has been criticized before.
  • Oushi is too possessive of Yuki.

A childhood friend vs the guy you just met feels like a theme that was around long before Twilight, and yet it is still quite popular in all types of media nowadays. And A Sign of Affection (Yubisaki to Renren) is no exception.

Yuki meets Itsuomi on a train, and it’s almost love at first sight. Their story is super cute and romantic, but there’s one thing that is constantly trying to spoil Yuki’s happiness, and this thing is her childhood friend, Oushi.

Oushi is too aggressive

When Oushi is first introduced into the story, he doesn’t come off well. He gets aggressive really quickly and warns Yuki about her relationship with Itsuomi. Later, when Oushi meets Yuki on the street and realizes that she’s on her way to meet Itsuomi, he gets annoyed again and tries to push her not to go.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced (yet?), we may understand that Oushi is romantically interested in Yuki, thus his inadequate reactions. We know he learned sign language for Yuki and we see that he really cares for her. So should she just forget about Itsuomi and end up with Oushi?

Is Oushi a better option?

A lot of fans think she should. While Itsuomi is the main male lead and Yuki’s romantic interest, a number of people find him weird and even creepy and problematic sometimes. His inability to respect Yuki’s personal space has been much criticized by fans.

However, a few touches cannot compare to the rage and controlling behavior that Oushi expresses. Yes, he does care about Yuki, but the way he treats her is even more questionable than Itsuomi touching Yuki’s head without asking for her consent, which she doesn’t mind by the way.

What she does mind, though, is someone telling her how to live her life and what she can and can’t do. And that is exactly what Oushi is doing. He has no right to decide with whom Yuki should spend her time. And while his concern makes sense, the way he expresses it is unacceptable.

That’s why Itsuomi looks like a much healthier and less problematic choice for Yuki at the moment, despite his love for ignoring personal space. Yuki doesn’t need someone who would treat her like a fragile vase because of her hearing impairment, she needs someone to support her and be kind to her.
