Death Parade Issues: Fans’ Opinions

What are the problems with the series?

Death Parade is a psychological thriller anime released back in 2015. The series tells us a story about a mysterious bar, Quindecim, where people are taken to after their demise. They have no recollection of their deaths and no understanding of how they got there. All the bar visitors are forced to play bizarre and often painful games, based on which they will be judged and either sent to oblivion or get reincarnated. The main story focuses on Chiyuki, a girl who for some reason hasn’t lost her memory. But this is not the only story of the anime: almost each episode features a couple of characters who are there to hurt you with their tragic fate.

The anime was met with praise and positive reviews, the fans mentioned stunning animation, engaging story and relatable characters. Due to the series having multiple stories, almost everyone could find someone to sympathize with. However, despite finding the show enjoyable and amusing, fans mention some issues that they didn’t really find that compelling.

One of the things fans talk about is inconsistency. The first game in the anime involves inflicting pain on the participants, and some of the further games follow suit. However, some people don’t understand the logic of that since not every game follows this strategy. Arbiters are allowed to raise the stakes as they think appropriate, but they don’t always do that. For example, fans wonder what could have been if the old lady from the series had also suffered from physical pain.

Another issue is the judges of Quindecim. Some fans admit liking Decim, who’s the judge the story focuses on the most, but they feel like other judges were not given proper attention and thus seemed uninteresting. One more thing that diminishes the believability for the viewers is arbiters’ promised emotionlessness. To stay reserved and detached during the judging process, they were made to feel nothing. Despite that, the arbiters show a lot of human-like emotions, and get angry and upset, which ruins the immersion for some fans because later in the show moments when Decim starts feeling something are major plot points.

The judging process itself has received some criticism as well. Viewers disagreed with some decisions and conclusions and felt like some games were not bringing out the good and bad in people but rather forcing them into intense situations where they had no choice but to act accordingly.
