Minor manga spoilers ahead!
Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) Episode 16 has just aired and made fans terribly worried about Falin and her condition. There are already a few theories that try to explain what happened to her, but they seem to be going in the wrong direction. So what actually happened to her?
Episode 16
We haven't been given much time to really enjoy Falin and understand how adorable she is after Laios' party saved and resurrected her in Episode 12. The series took her away from us again, leaving the party heartbroken.
Since then, there hasn't been much of Falin, but Episode 16 gave viewers a glimpse of her. The episode ends with her crawling with blood dripping off her body. Falin mentions King Delgal's name and says that she'll find him.
The scene made fans think that something was seriously wrong with Falin, since it was nothing like her. Something terrible is happening to the beloved mage, and there has to be a reason for that.
Dark Magic Has Consequences
Right before the final Falin scene, the characters were discussing the use of dark magic and how terrible the consequences of using it are. Which led fans to think that Falin wasn't herself due to some dark magic side effects.
However, it's not exactly true. Manga readers promise that the series will indeed show you some consequences of dark magic and explore this concept better in the future, but right now there's another reason for Falin's behavior.
It's Because of the Dragon's Body
Dark magic wasn't the only thing that helped Marcille resurrect Falin, it was also the body of the Red Dragon. She used it to create a new body for her friend, added forbidden magic to that, and voilà, Falin is back from the dead.
The Red Dragon was part of the dungeon created by Thistle, and by using its remains to resurrect Falin, Marcille made Falin part of the dungeon, too. It messed up with her mind and turned her into what you saw at the end of Episode 16.
What Marcille didn't know, the Red Dragon was soulbound to Thistle, and its soul couldn't leave the body like it usually happens to other monsters. It bound Falin to the dragon and impacted her a lot.
If Marcille had used any other monster or creature for the process of resurrection, Falin wouldn't have ended up like that. And Marcille was unaware of what she was really doing, which led to some unsettling consequences.
