Gurren Lagann is a post-apocalyptic story about mecha and constantly rising stakes.
The two movies are an abridged version of the TV show, with additional materials.
The giant mecha from the final fight will be even MORE giant.
Buy the tickets on December 8th for the screenings in January.
There are different types of highly rated and popular anime. There are overhyped shows — those that are only considered good due to them lucking out at the time of release, be it through being early on a trend, or getting more eyes on them through unscrupulous means — like Goblin Slayer and the Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari). There are shows that are genuinely great, but are not memorable enough to still be remembered in a decade or two — like Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) and, sadly, Golden Kamuy (its 4th season just concluded this year, and we’ve only just remembered about its existence!). And then, there are the classics.
You know these shows. Regardless of if you like them or not, anime like Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell, have long since been acknowledged as timeless stories that need to be at least known by every enthusiast of the medium. And one of these shows will return to theaters in January
Giant robots with drills
If you are familiar with Hiroyuki Imaishi as a director (Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Kill la Kill, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Promare), then you know what to expect from his original works — high octane action built upon an utterly ridiculous premise.
This time around, it’s a post-apocalyptic world where humans live underground, while genetically modified beastmen on giant robots stomp out any human foolish enough to reach the surface. The main characters hijack a bunch of these mecha, power them with their literal willpower, and start an all-out war for the surface — which, of course, eventually lifts the stakes through the stratosphere and to the edge of the observable Universe. Literally.
So if you’re a long time fan of Gurren Lagann, or want to experience this epic story for the first time — it’s a golden opportunity for you!
Two movies?
Gurren Lagann was released as a TV series first — followed by two movies, Gurren-hen (Childhood's End) and Lagann-hen (The Lights in the Sky are Stars). Rather than new stories, the two are essentially abridged retellings of the original series — except, with additional materials. Did you know that the original final fight featured the biggest mecha in all known fiction? Well, the movie features an even bigger mecha than that, because why not.
The movies were announced to be re-released in 4k and 4D in 2024, with two screenings for each — the first one for subbed version, and the second one for the dub. The tickets will be sold on December 8th at FathomEvents.com — so if you want to see them, take note! The first movie will air on January 16th and 17th. The second movie will air on January 23rd and 24th.
Don’t miss the high octane giant mecha action!
