Fans are worried it won’t look good.
Summary:
- Season 1 of Frieren looks amazing, and Season 2 of it might not look as great.
- Fans would rather not have Season 2 at all than settle for a disappointing sequel.
- Season 2 isn’t even announced — it’s too early to talk about that.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Frieren) has been one of the biggest hits in the past years. Its popularity has caught everyone by surprise, and many accepted the fact that it will get a second season one day.
However, some fans are not that optimistic about its sequel. While yes, a sequel is likely to happen, many are skeptical about it being as good as the first season. The issue has nothing to do with the content in the manga, however: fans just don’t believe it will look as good as the original.
Season 1 production is a miracle
The second season of the anime looking worse than the first one is something that happens quite often. Perhaps the most common example of that is One Punch Man Season 2 — which was regarded as a disaster by many fans.
The situation with One Punch Man S2 was more complex than you might have thought. The first season was basically a miracle production that could never have been replicated.
Interestingly enough, the producer of OPM S1, Yuuichirou Fukushi, was also involved with Frieren, and him assembling an all-star team of animators is one of the big reasons why it looks so good.
With One Punch Man S2 being a huge downgrade from S1, many fans assume that the second season of Frieren might also be a downgrade from the first one. As such, the second season of Frieren looking much worse than the first one would be a disaster.
Even if it stays within studio Madhouse (and OPM S2 didn’t), if it won’t be as great visually as the first one, it will be heavily criticized.
Fans’ opinions
Fans would rather have no sequel for Frieren at all than settle for a mediocre-looking one. After all, the manga is always there if you want to continue the story.
Yes, the current arc isn’t exactly a great stopping point, but Frieren fans want their anime to remain in history as one of the greatest productions of all time. That’s a far better way to be remembered than S2 being constantly criticized for being bad.
Others feel that the second season of Frieren looking worse than the first one is baseless speculation. After all, we don’t even have confirmation the sequel will even air — or that it will air as a TV series.
If the potential second season is scheduled for two cours, for example, it will catch up to where the manga is now. Perhaps Frieren S2 isn’t coming anytime soon
