Has Promised Neverland Manga Lost Its Way

Is it getting worse?

Summary:

  • The second season of The Promised Neverland gets criticized a lot for its deviation from the manga.
  • The manga also got worse over time, as some fans say.
  • There are still those who truly enjoyed the entire experience.

The Promised Neverland manga spoilers ahead!

The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland) is usually discussed when it comes to criticizing its second season, and we’ve also done that plenty of times. When talking about the anime sequel, fans’ first point is “manga was better!” And that’s the truth. The first season of the anime was very close to the original source, and this is one of the reasons why it was so successful. While the second season felt like a slap in the face for so many viewers.

So why are we talking about manga now if it is so good? It’s true that the events of the second season of The Promised Neverland are much better in the manga. The original source has better pacing, more explanation, and doesn’t have a number of questionable storytelling decisions present in the anime. The manga is unquestionably better, although a couple of fans feel like it followed its anime mate at some point.

Still better than the anime

It’s fair to say that no one seems to hate the manga the way they hated the anime. Season 2 was such a disaster that it’s hardly possible to do that. But still, there were some questionable moments, too. They say that after the Goldy Pond arc things started going downhill.

The Promised Neverland used to be a psychological horror about kids trying to outsmart an enemy who possesses more resources and intelligence. But after the time skip, the riddle is solved, and they’re very close to solving another mystery. The story progression and development were lacking.

Emma and Ray deserved better

Some fans also didn’t really like the ending. We don’t mean the overall events, but Emma’s storyline was the thing that they didn’t find enjoyable. The girl sacrifices her memories so that everyone can travel to another world and live their normal lives. But Emma forgets about everything that has happened. Such a cruel treatment of the main protagonist.

Ray seems to have also been done dirty. At the beginning of the story he was definitely one of the smartest characters in the series. He was the mastermind behind the entire exposition, since it was him who drove Emma and Norman to the truth. And now he’s just someone who always agrees with Emma, feeling very out of character.

Still, no matter how many people think that the manga became less enjoyable closer to its end, there is still a large number of people who admit to loving the entire thing. And we really want to know what you think about The Promised Neverland!
