Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) started airing a couple of months ago, and it’s already become huge. And does Frieren really deserve all the love?

There’s no doubt that Frieren is an incredibly well-made series. The characters have dimensions and complexity, the writing is good, and the art style is phenomenally beautiful. So what’s not to like, then?

Frieren might be overrated

It’s obvious that Frieren is a good show, but is it really as good as everyone is saying? We have to admit that the answer might not be positive. Don’t get us wrong, it’s worth watching if you’re into slower and deeper shows that take their time to introduce the characters and allow you to just sit back and enjoy the story. But the hype made us all think that there was something extraordinary going on in Frieren. And that’s, unfortunately, not true.

Frieren starts rather slowly, and if you think that it gets better and more action-focused later on, then you’re in for a disappointment. Most of the time the series feels like a slice-of-life series with how little is happening on your screen. Maybe it’s all just a clever metaphor for Frieren’s life, which is also long and often uneventful. This would make sense since the series is trying to make you join Frieren on her journey to fully understand her experience. But we have to be honest, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Overall, Frieren is an enjoyable and relaxed experience, but this is it. You won’t see any shocking plot twists, battle sequences will not take the most of the screen time. The characters are what make it great, so if you find yourself emotionally attached to them, Frieren will work perfectly for you. However, if not, then you’ll hardly find the series enjoyable.

The hype ruined Frieren

Since the series has become widely popular, the expectations are high. You hear about a series so good that it overcomes Fullmetal Alchemist’s ratings. You learn that it’s about an elven mage, dragons and magic. And all of that makes you imagine a completely different picture from reality. You’re craving a great adventure with sorcery and mythical creatures, but you have a series where two girls are looking for a specific flower for 50% of an episode.

It doesn’t mean that the series is not worth your time and attention. As we’ve said, Frieren is really good at what it’s trying to do. But be prepared that this might not be the thing that you expected to see.
