Is Winter 2024 the Season of Sequels? Well, No, But It's Understandable Why Anime Fans Consider It One

Perhaps the reason it is called one is the fact that people don’t want to try anything new.

Summary:

  • Winter 2024 is called a “sequel season” by some fans, quoting a lack of impactful anime outside of Solo Leveling.
  • While it is true that Winter 2024 has many sequels, it also has many other series worth checking out.
  • It’s way too early to make such conclusions about the season — a lot of anime haven’t even aired yet.

For many otaku, the last anime year was one of the most exciting ever. Between long-awaited sequels like Jujutsu Kaisen and Vinland Saga Season 2, and new series like Oshi no Ko and Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku), every season had something exciting to offer.

That can’t really be said about the Winter 2024 season — at least according to many viewers. Is Winter 2024 just about sequels or are there new great anime as well?

What even is there to watch?

Arguably the most hyped anime of the season was Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken). Since it’s an adaptation of one of the most popular manhwa, the excitement for the anime was incredibly high — as were the expectations of many.

The first episode was decent, but otaku expected so much more. Perhaps, the anime could have benefited from a double-length premiere.

Outside of Solo Leveling, the most popular anime of the season seem to be sequels. Series like Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu (Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-) and Mashle are finally getting their second seasons.

Classroom of the Elite (Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e) is on its third one, and it still has a considerable following. Many other series like Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist), Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki (Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun) and The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu) are also getting sequels this winter.

More than just sequels

Despite the abundance of second and third seasons being released, it’s not like the season is centered only around them. Many new series like Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) and A Sign of Affection (Yubisaki no Renren) are very much worth watching — there’s no reason to stick to only the most popular things of the season.

Outside of the sequels and new shows, many carryovers from last season are also part of Winter 2024. Series like Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) and The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) are still airing — viewers shouldn’t disregard them while talking about this season.

Too early to conclude anything

Ultimately, though, it’s way too early to talk about the season being less or more interesting than the previous ones. Many anime haven’t even started yet — and for some that already have, it might take a while to get them going and amass a critical amount of followers.

What is certain, however, is that while Winter 2024 does have many sequels, it’s not a season that has nothing to offer outside of them.

Perhaps the reason it is called one is the fact that people don’t want to try anything new.
