Gege Akutami doesn’t know what to do with his story anymore.
The last 24 hours have been a wild ride for the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom. Chapter 254 leaks have appeared all over the Internet, and manga readers have lost their minds. At this point, everyone just wants to be done with it in any way possible.
Chapter 254 leaks
Judging by the leaks, the latest chapter follows the exact same route as all of the previous ones: a new character joins the fight, they do some insignificant damage to Sukuna, they die. Feels like Akutami Gege has decided it’s the ultimate formula for the final battle success. But readers strongly disagree.
The parade of meaningful deaths started back in Chapter 236 when Gojo met his end at the hands of Sukuna. There were multiple characters fighting the King of Curses ever since: Kashimo, Higuruma, Yuji and Yuta, Maki, and all of them are either defeated or dead.
Chapter 254 just adds one more victim to this list: Kusakabe. It’s still unclear whether the man can be saved, but it didn’t look good for him.
Miguel joins the fight after Kusakabe’s defeat, and manga readers are sure: the next chapter will be just like all the previous ones. Miguel will try to fight Sukuna, deal some damage, and be gone for good.
It’s not entertaining anymore
Jujutsu Kaisen used to be fun and shocking back in the day. The Shibuya Incident Arc showed us how unforgiving the series is to its characters. This was the moment fans understood: no one is safe in the manga.
But right now,it feels like the manga is stuck with this “everyone can die” concept and doesn’t know what to do apart from killing important (and not so much) characters.
The shock factor works well only for the first couple of times. There comes a moment when it becomes repetitive and unamusing, and this is exactly what’s happening to the Jujutsu Kaisen manga right now. It’s at a point where we don’t even care about the finale anymore, we just want the entire thing to end.
There has to be a reason for killing important characters, and Jujutsu Kaisen seems to be missing that. Gojo’s death was a turning point for the fandom, and no matter how people are trying to promote the “he had to die for his students to become stronger” narrative, we just don’t see it.
Gojo’s students still get beaten up by Sukuna effortlessly, and it makes the story more and more confusing with each chapter. Where is Gege even going with it?
Every character knows how strong and dangerous Sukuna is, but they keep coming at him one by one and keep dropping like flies, this just doesn’t make any sense anymore.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) are having fun with jokes and memes right now, and it’s upsetting that Jujutsu Kaisen is becoming more and more like that with each chapter. Becoming a joke.
A lot of missed opportunities
Jujutsu Kaisen has a very interesting world with techniques so intricate that they can be discussed for ages. There’s so much room for drama, character development, and exploration of power and trauma response. The series has all of that right there, and yet it doesn’t seem to know how to use it well.
Instead of that, we keep experiencing a fight after a fight, followed by even more fights. There’s no emotional connection anymore, it’s difficult to care about the characters and their fates. Why would anyone care if everyone dies anyway?
The story hasn't been progressing for a long time, it’s just a bunch of sorcerers trying to fight Sukuna and failing. It was exciting when Gojo got unsealed but everything that happened after that is a huge disappointment.
Gojo himself is a huge missed opportunity. This character was hyped up straight from the beginning of the series. The manga makes it clear: he’s the strongest, and you can feel his power.
It was such a big deal that Gojo got sealed, and we expected him to do great things when he finally got out of his prison. But he just loses to Sukuna and is killed off screen. It’s even difficult to believe that.
Gege has written himself in a corner
It seems like the author has created such an intricate world with immensely powerful characters that he doesn’t even know what to do with all of that anymore.
He struggled with writing Gojo because of that, and decided to kill him off, so that he wouldn’t be an issue anymore. And now the same thing is happening to Sukuna. The most recurring question is “how do the sorcerers even get out of all this?”. And the most upsetting speculation is that Gege doesn’t know that, either.
Something new desperately needs to happen in the series, all the repetitiveness is killing the hype for the series. There’s still hope that it’s all just Gege’s clever plan, but fans are losing this hope more and more with each chapter.
Do you like where the manga is going at the moment?
This is getting ridiculous.
Major manga spoilers ahead!
