Episode 18 aired yesterday, and the animation quality drop is even more noticeable.
The most painful thing is Nanami’s death, though.
The entire sequence leading to his death was beautiful, but heartbreaking.
It’s become a must by now to start every conversation about Jujutsu Kaisen with a couple of comments about its animation quality, and Episode 18 is not an exception. The drop in animation quality after Episode 17 was confirmed by JJK animators before due to their terrible working conditions and unfair deadlines, and it turned out to be true. A lot of things in the episode look unfinished, and we can’t help but wonder what could have been if that wasn’t the case.
But there’s nothing particularly new we could add on this topic, so let’s leave the poor animators alone for now and focus on something that hurts us just as much as the current anime industry situation: Nanami’s death.
Nanami has always been a fan favorite character. Straight from the beginning, when he joined the series with his tired look and badass technique, everyone knew: this character is exceptional. And we’re not ready to say goodbye, even though manga readers told us that we’d have to a long time ago.
Nanami sequence was beautiful
After the opening theme is over, the episode starts with Nanami. He’s on the beach, calm, relaxed and safe. He’s dreaming about the life he could have after the horrors are over. Nanami wishes to live in a house in Malaysia and finally read all those books he never got to read. After being wounded by Jogo, Nanami is even more exhausted than ever, and all he wants is just to have some rest. He deserves it, and we agree.
The sequence leading to Nanami’s death is executed beautifully. His relaxed dreams are juxtaposed to his wounded form, fighting the cursed spirits, while Mahito is lurking in the shadows, watching him. The entire thing feels like a goodbye, and you can feel that something terrible is about to happen. And, unfortunately, it does. Mahito comes out and offers Nanami a chat. Yuji appears and the last thing Nanami does before getting killed by Mahito is tell Yuji that he counts on him.
Nanami will be missed
It doesn’t matter if you’re a manga reader and you’ve known about it all along, or if Nanami’s death was a horrendous surprise for you — the scene is soul crashing. The way Yuji says 'Nanami' was heartbreaking, and it only adds to the feeling of trauma and despair after Yuji's breakdown in the previous episode.
This episode is definitely going to leave a void in all of the Nanami stans’ hearts, and it will take some time for us all to heal after that. It’s painful to say goodbye to one of the most favorite JJK characters, but maybe it’s really time to give the man some rest and leave him out of everything that’s going to happen.
What a wild ride it was.
Major JJK S2E18 spoilers ahead!
