Kaiju No. 8 Episode 1 Gives Fans Attack on Titan Vibes

Kaiju No. 8 Episode 1 Gives Fans Attack on Titan Vibes

Is it going to be the shounen of the season?

Summary:

  • Kaiju No. 8 started airing on April 13.
  • Episode 1 is better than expected.
  • Fans have noticed some Attack on Titan similarities.

Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) is a fresh shounen series that started airing on April 13, 2024. Episode 1 was streamed on Crunchyroll and, surprisingly, on X (formerly Twitter).

The series follows Kafka, who is a sweeper, a person who cleans up the remains of monsters (or kaiju) in Japan. Kafka is not fond of his job, as he has always dreamed of becoming a member of the Defense Corps instead.

After an encounter with a kaiju goes wrong, Kafka is in a hospital where another monster finds him and forces its way in through his mouth, turning the main protagonist into a monster, too.

Episode 1 Was Better Than Expected

There were a lot of doubts about Kaiju No. 8. The series seemed interesting enough to try, but not interesting enough to make a big fuss about. The character design was what attracted the most attention, and we have to admit that this is the only thing that stands out in a bad way for now.

It’s not that the anime looks terrible, no, but the main protagonist’s design is rather unappealing. Kafka doesn’t look like the lead of a shounen series, he resembles a side character that’s about to be killed off during the first mission instead.

But apart from the character design, everything in the episode seemed promising. There's a quick introduction with just the right amount of new information, the pacing is great.

The most surprising thing about Kaiju No. 8 is its humor. There were a lot of jokes, and they weren’t as bad as expected. It’s easy to find yourself giggling a bit while watching the episode.

Episode 1 made a number of fans think of Attack on Titan, and they have a point. We have the main protagonist who hates monsters and promises to kill them all as a kid, but then turns into one of the monsters instead.

There’s also a female childhood friend who is so skilled that she could easily be superhuman (hello, Mikasa). They also both wanted to join the Defense Corps, which is another thing that reminds fans of Eren and Mikasa discussing the Survey Corps.

Moreover, Kaiju No. 8 gives off the same military structure vibes as Attack on Titan, and even starts with soldiers fighting a giant monster.

However, Kaiju No. 8 is nowhere near as serious as Attack on Titan for now, it tries to focus a lot on humor. We don’t know if it’ll continue this way, but it’s definitely refreshing.
