Kaiju No. 8 Will Be 12 Episodes Long, Fans May Have to Wait for Season 2

And somehow fans aren’t that unhappy about it.

Summary:

  • Kaiju no. 8 is listed for 12 episodes.
  • The manga doesn’t have enough content for more.
  • Fans are fine with it not getting a sequel.

Kaiju no. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) might be one of the biggest anime of the Spring 2024 season. While it’s hard to tell yet, as the season has just started, its popularity is immense, especially compared to other non-sequels.

As such, fans are wondering how long it will be. After all, it’s a Shounen Jump+ (web edition of Weekly Shounen Jump) adaptation, and these series often get at least two cours, and/or multiple seasons.

However, according to the BD listings on the official website, it will only be 12 episodes long — but fans argue that it couldn’t have been longer anyway.

The Manga Does Not Have Enough Content

First of all, there simply isn’t enough content in Kaiju no. 8 to make a two-cour series. Yes, there are slightly over 100 chapters out right now, but these chapters are pretty short. A lot of the time, they are under 20 pages long, and only have a few panels.

As if that wasn’t enough, many of the panels have little to no impact on the main story. They provide reactions of side characters to current events every now and then, and these wouldn’t even make up a full scene in the anime.

The pacing of the manga is very slow — there was a training arc that took almost a year, and the series is weekly, not monthly. At least the art is good.

Considering these factors, it’s really hard to believe the anime will receive a second season anytime soon. There’s a good chance the anime will cover more than half of the currently existing material. However, fans are perfectly fine with it not getting a sequel.

What Do Fans Think?

The first arcs of the manga suffer much less from the aforementioned issues. Moreover, according to fans, Kaiju no. 8 gets more generic as the story progresses, and the plot goes nowhere. As such, adapting only the best part is not that bad of an idea.

That said, it would be somewhat sad not to see the story completed. In fact, we’ve been getting many full adaptations recently, and this particular manga not being fully adapted would be weird. It’s not the best thing ever, but it’s not terrible either.

Some fans, however, feel that the anime will get Season 2 eventually. After all, it got a huge promotion campaign — it has popular western artists for the theme songs, and it’s streaming on X (formerly Twitter).

There’s a good chance that investors will want a sequel if this marketing strategy pays off.
