Why There Are So Many Full Anime Adaptations These Days

Well, probably because they sell well.

Summary:

  • We are getting more full adaptations these days than ever.
  • Popular shounen manga always had decent chances to be fully adapted, but even light novel adaptations get many seasons these days.
  • Fans believe it’s simply because sequels to popular anime still sell well.

Back in the day, getting a full adaptation for a manga — or, even worse, a light novel — was usually incredibly rare. Not many series got that — at best, we were getting anime-original endings, which were often controversial.

In the past few years, anime-original endings — as well as filler episodes — practically stopped existing. Moreover, many anime are getting more and more seasons, shaping up to be full adaptations of their source material. Fans are happy about it, but it also feels somewhat surreal.

Tons of Anime Are Getting 4+ Seasons These Days

Many anime these years have been going on for more than 3 seasons, something practically unheard of in the 00s and early 10s. Examples include My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia) and Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), which fans are very sure about getting a complete adaptation at some point.

Another popular shounen series, Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), was already fully adapted. Yes, the last part of it was controversial, but the case still stands. Even an anime like Fire Force (Enen no Shouboutai), which seemingly had poor sales, is planned for Season 3 — and some fans suspect it will go even beyond that.

Even Light Novel Adaptations Run for Many Seasons Now

That said, popular shounen manga getting a full adaptation isn’t that surprising — however, most of the time back in the day, it was in the format of one long-running series. What surprises fans more is light novel adaptations getting many sequels.

It seems that we will see Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) fully adapted at some point — although that might take years.

Another series — airing right now — that fans are speculating about is Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou). The first scene in the remake made many fans believe the studio wants to adapt the entire main story.

Making Sequels to Popular Anime Is Probably Profitable

The situation is unusual, but it does make anime fans very happy. After all, they can finally watch the complete stories in the anime format, without having to read the source material afterwards.

As for why that is happening — we don’t know yet. Many suspect making sequels to already popular series is more economically profitable than adapting less popular source material — as such, popular anime have a chance to fully adapt their manga or LNs.
