Kengan Ashura is a testosterone-fueled action series from the little-known studio Larx Entertainment.
And while the studio has yet to make a name for itself with any notable series, the team does have an experienced director – Seiji Kishi, who worked on Angel Beats! and Persona 4. And the plot is based on the manga of the same name by Yabako Sandrovich.
What is Kengan Ashura About?
The plot revolves around the ancient Japanese tradition of hand-to-hand combat. Many wealthy people used such fights to settle their own conflicts.
The rules are simple: no weapons are allowed, only brute physical force. Whoever wins in the gladiatorial arena wins the conflict, and the dispute is resolved in his favor. That is why the Japanese rich are very interested in acquiring really talented fighters.
One of these fighters is the main character of the anime, Ohma Tokita, also known as Ashura. He is unbelievably strong, and always wins in the fights. This attracts the attention of Hideki Nogi, chairman of the Nogi Group, who assigns his employee Kazuo Yamashita to become the fighter's manager and invites Ashura himself to participate in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament.
The winner of the tournament will receive a great deal of power, fame, and prestige, so the main character makes it his goal to win the tournament.
Season 1 Success Secured the Title For a Second Season
The first season, which aired in 2019, ended with the final match between Ashura and his strongest opponent, Raian Kure.
Following the success of the series, Netflix immediately renewed the project for a second season, the first part of which was released on September 21, 2023. On August 15, the second part of the second season, consisting of 16 episodes, was released.
In the second season, Ohma Tokita reaches the third round and continues his journey to complete victory in the tournament.
Kengan Ashura Focuses Mainly on Fighting
The anime gained popularity thanks to its dynamic action. Kengan Ashura doesn't have spectacular plot twists or complex character arcs, but it does have visual sharpness, vivid fight choreography, and an eye-catching pace of development.
This dynamic allows the viewer to trust the power of animation and not be afraid to get lost in the intricacies of the story.
Where to Watch Kengan Ashura?
