If you think about it, Frieren’s original party was a strange bunch. Few would expect them to win in a battle against the Demon King, but they did. It just goes to show that flawed people can make a difference.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) spoilers ahead!
Summary
- Himmel was somewhat narcissistic. According to the Hero Sword, he was also a fake hero.
- Heiter had an obvious drinking problem despite being a priest.
- Eisen was easily spooked, although fans love him for his sage words.
- Frieren has always had a problem with wanting to have all the loot.
- Frieren’s original party was not without flaws, but that makes them more believable while showing that flawed people can make a difference.
Himmel
Fans adore Himmel (and we can’t help but agree). He was brave and resilient, but he did love his appearance a little too much. Throughout their travels, Himmel would insist on making statues of himself. He claimed that it was for Frieren to remember them, but he also admitted to believing that his beautiful face needed to be remembered. He was quite a narcissistic young man. Also, the Hero Sword did not consider him a real hero, but who trusts that chunk of metal, right?
Heiter
Heiter was a great, kind man. He became a father figure for Fern, and he made sure that Frieren stayed with them, so that the two would travel together. But despite being a priest, Heiter had a drinking problem. To be fair, alcohol addiction is a medical condition rather than a flaw, but it did mean for everybody around him that he was not that devoted to the Goddess since he could not quit drinking.
Eisen
Eisen’s flaw was very simple: he was and is a coward. He does not think that it is necessarily a bad trait; after all, being afraid kept him alive for so long. Fans adore Eisen’s wisdom, and he seemed like a good teacher to Stark, so we love Eisen. After all, being afraid did not stop him from being a great party member.
Frieren
Frieren has a couple of flaws, most notably her excessive interest in looting and emotional detachment from the party. However, she seems to be a good teacher to Fern and a good friend to both Fern and Stark. From what we see of her in the previous party, she made the travel ridiculous but fun, using Eisen’s words.
Fans love the original party, even as they notice flaws in every member. If anything, those flaws humanize the party members and make us love them more. Choosing to include a flawed protagonist in the story goes to show that flawed — that is, real — people can make a difference.
