This increases the demand for shorter, fast-paced series.
Long-running series are also good, but they have their disadvantages.
We don’t want to sound like grumpy old men, but nowadays everyone’s attention span seems to get smaller and smaller. People used to watch long reviews, puzzling videos or even just AMVs that lasted for an entire song. And now with TikTok being one of the most popular social platforms there are, we can’t seem to concentrate for longer than 10-20 seconds, and move on to the next thing. And something similar is happening with the manga and anime industry.
Fast series are trendy now
There’s been a new wave of short and fast-paced series. The Chainsaw Man manga has two parts, and while we don’t really know when the second part will come to its conclusion, the first part was dealt with rather quickly. It started in 2018 and ended in 2020. Yana Toboso (the author of Black Butler (Kuroshisuji) would gasp in horror if she heard about that!
Jujutsu Kaisen is another series that started back in 2018, and even though it’s still going, fans have been saying that the end is near for months. Demon Slayer (Kimutsu no Yaiba) managed to resolve all of the issues in four years (2016 - 2020), and some suggest that even this amount of time was a bit too much. And these are the series that are extremely popular now, so it says a lot about the demand in the industry. Is it such a bad thing?
The simple answer is no, it’s not. The rhythm of life is indeed changing, we’re always rushing somewhere and are extremely busy, so sorry, Frieren fans, if we don’t have time to watch absolutely nothing happening on our screens for several episodes. We need action, we need drive, we need excitement. And this is when fast-paced series come to our aid.
Longer series are not forgotten, either
But it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a good old 500+ episode adventure (yes, Naruto and One Piece, we’re looking at you). When you spend this much time with your favorite characters, you feel more attached to them, you are truly involved in their story, and you’re incredibly proud of seeing their character development. There are some anime that you’ve grown up with, and that’s why they are so dear to you. Such things should also exist, because everyone is looking for a different type of entertainment.
However, long-running series can affect the authors a lot. They can become the slaves of their own success, and it can even have an impact on their mental health. And if an author is in a bad condition, this will also influence their work quality, so it’s a lose-lose situation for everyone.
Which do you prefer?
Have we lost the ability to pay attention?
