Ninja Kamui is an ongoing sci-fi action series that premiered on February 11, 2024. It took the series only one episode to completely fascinate the viewers, and it feels like the series is getting more and more popular with each episode released.
The series follows Joe Higan, a former assassin who wants nothing more than to forget about his dark past and just live a simple life with his family. However, there’s no such thing as a former assassin, and Joe is about to find that out.
Joseph Chou is the co-creator and producer of Ninja Kamui. Adult Swim announced an AMA (Ask me anything) with Chou on March 13, 2024, and fans got the chance to ask the producer any questions about Ninja Kamui and his other projects.
Inspirations behind Ninja Kamui creation
Since Ninja Kamui is an original anime series, there is no manga to consult when it comes to working on the series. That’s why it was so interesting for fans to learn how the series was created and what it was inspired by.
Chou revealed that the team took the biggest inspiration from anime and games they grew up with. Back in the 80s and 90s, ninjas were everywhere, and the producer mentions such games as Sega’s Shinobi and Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden.
Joseph Chou also says that he and Seong-Hu Park (Ninja Kamui director) have always been fans of Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s works and wanted to pay homage to his Ninja Scroll.
The producer also mentions a Japanese author Futaro Yamada, saying that a lot of ninja-focused media drew inspiration from his outstanding works. Chou wanted to see how these ideas could be transferred into a modern setting.
Turns out all the John Wick comparisons were spot-on. Chou admits that Joe was really inspired by this character as well as by Marvel’s The Punisher. Moreover, John Wick's director Chad Stahelski helped with the finale of Ninja Kamui.
Other anime adaptations
The great work that the production team is doing on Ninja Kamui makes fans wonder whether there are other series that the staff wants to adapt into anime.
As it turns out, Chou has made almost all of his dreams come true. He really wanted to do something with the Matrix, and got to work on the Animatrix. Then came Blade Runner and The Lord of the Rings. So the only thing that’s still on his mind is Gundam. We’d really love to see what he can do with it.
