Upcoming Ninja Kamui Anime is Giving John Wick Vibes

Ex-ninja and revenge.

Summary:

  • Ninja Kamui is an original anime series scheduled for February 11.
  • It follows a former ninja, trying to avenge his family.
  • The lack of updates about the project is upsetting.

Ninja Kamui is an upcoming original anime series that was announced back in 2022. E&H Production is animating the series, and Seong-Hu Park (Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1) is directing it.

A teaser trailer for the anime was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, and back then we only had a vague “coming 2024.” However, Adult Swim has announced that the premiere of Ninja Kamui is scheduled for February 11, 2024, which leaves us with less than a month of waiting.

John Wick minus the dog

Joe Higan is a former ninja who escaped his clan. He just wants to forget his violent past and enjoy a simple life with his family, but his organization assassins have another idea. They ambush Joe and deal with his family to make the former ninja pay for his betrayal. And now he’s the one who craves revenge.

The premise of Ninja Kamui sounds a lot like one of the John Wick movies. Just add a dead dog, and we’re done. The brutal trailer with Joe Higan dealing with the assassins makes the resemblance even clearer.

You can describe it with two words: beauty and brutality. The art style and animation are top-notch, and we feel like there won’t be any lack of violence in the series.

Where are the updates?

The trailer, however, is all we’ve got for now, and that’s frustrating and puzzling. With only a month before the premiere, you would expect the series to have more content and promotion materials, but a new visual is all we’ve received.

The visual doesn’t offer much to go with, either, if we’re being honest. It’s stunning, that’s for sure, and we have to praise the color choice: red. Which is perfect for the blood-thirsty protagonist.

Fans think that Ninja Kamui has terrible marketing due to how little we know of the upcoming series. The first trailer was released in July 2023, and there haven’t been even tiny teasers ever since. But there’s hope that the closer the release will get, the more details we’ll be receiving.

Still, it doesn’t mean that fans aren’t excited. The trailer does look spectacular and while the premise feels rather overused, there’s something intriguing to it. Fans don’t think it will be a simple revenge story and hope to experience some new concepts and themes in the anime.
