Let’s praise MAPPA for a change.
Summary:
- Oblivion Battery animation was raising a lot of concerns.
- The series looks pretty decent.
- It shouldn’t be criticized because of MAPPA’s controversies.
After all the production controversies involving MAPPA, all eyes are on their new projects. Fans are begging other studios to take some series away from the company, there are worries about famous sequels like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen, every little thing that was made by MAPPA is scrutinized.
Oblivion Battery (Boukyaku Battery) is a fresh sports anime by MAPPA, so it naturally couldn’t avoid bad-animation allegations, either. Back when the first trailers started coming out, fans were not satisfied with the animation quality and thought the series would be a major disaster.
Made With Love
It might feel like such an anime as Oblivion Battery is not a priority to MAPPA, and that makes sense, but fans have noticed the care the studio’s animators have been putting into this anime.
The movements are smooth, the baseball aspects are detailed and fluid, there’s nothing to draw the viewer’s attention in a negative way. It seems the studio is putting a lot of work into the adaptation, and fans can feel it.
Oblivion Battery focuses on humor a lot. The Dragon Ball’s Super Saiyan reference in Episode 3 got fans wheezing, and the art style and animation did a lot for that as well. MAPPA is really putting in a lot of extra touches to make the series enjoyable.
It’s also important to say a few words about the character design in the series, as almost every character looks stunning. The main duo of Kei and Haruka look like they’ve been just modeling for a fashion magazine, and the care the studio took to make their eyes look absolutely dazzling is incredible.
There are already a couple of official clips online with small glimpses at animation progress, and they also surprised the fans with how well-drawn and detailed everything is.
And the best part is that all the good stuff is just on the way. We’re yet to see a proper baseball game in the anime, but everything we’ve seen so far gives us great hope that Oblivion Battery will look amazing.
Not the Series’ Fault
It’s completely understandable why people would want to criticize MAPPA. The studio’s awful conditions turned into a major controversy in 2023 when Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen was airing. And right now there’s a new surge of disappointment in the studio due to the cancellation of the Yuri on Ice movie.
However, it’s not the fault of Oblivion Battery and its animators. They’re doing everything they can to make the anime good-looking and enjoyable. And judging by the latest episodes, they’re succeeding.
