It's a pretty popular plot, the one where the main character starts as a scum but then gets better over time. The difference lies in how much of a scum that character was. Today we want to bring you a list of five anime with main characters who were yankees, delinquents, outlaws, whose journey focused on them becoming a bit more fit for social life.
An ex-leader of the biker gang decides that he always wanted to be a teacher — and not just a teacher, but the greatest one in Japan. His motivation is pretty questionable and not noble at all, but he ends up teaching, after all — though with his record, the only class he's allowed to teach is a class of delinquent kids. He himself is lazy, perverted and morally gray and seems like a perfect fit for the kids entrusted to him. He teaches them not his subject but the way of life — and, surprisingly, changes himself.
Slam Dunk
Hanamichi Sakuragi just wants love. Okay, no, he wants a girlfriend, and in order to get one, he ends up joining the basketball club in his new school. He's pretty fit and tall but has a fiery temper and is prone to dealing with the things that trouble him by punching them. Throughout the course of the story, however, he learns to dial himself down a bit. The thing that helps him is the fact that he's now part of the team, and they have to support each other and be reliable. And, well, he still wants to get a girl. Both the manga and the anime are super funny but at the same time dramatic and wholesome. It's insane.
YuYu Hakusho
Yuusuke Urameshi is a bad boy with a surprisingly golden heart: he's a delinquent, but he didn't think long before throwing himself in front of a car to save a boy. For that, he gets another chance to fix his life, as the authorities of the spirit realm didn't expect his untimely passing and don't know what to do with him. In order to keep living, though, he has to become some sort of warrior who deals with the malevolent spirits under the guidance of the gods. This quest seems quite enlightening to him and his team and changes them for the better.
Beelzebub
Ishiyama High School houses only delinquents, but of varying sorts. Some are just menacing, others are purely demonic. All the delinquents here embrace their way of life, but it so happens that underneath the harsh exterior, most of them have soft and caring hearts. They just need to coax them out. And the show does a great job doing that, as its main plot focuses on a group of people who prefer violence over anything else caring for a baby demon lord. It's super unserious and funny, but full of heart.
A group of delinquent kids bond over the quest to kill their teacher. If the premise doesn't sound insane enough, then we don't know what can top it. The series is positively insane, it features kids who gave up on their academic success and sometimes even their lives, but then they get a purpose. And a great teacher too, who helps them deal with their grades and the academic material that they struggle with and teaches them the most effective ways to kill him. The kids really shine under Koro-sensei's mentorship, and really grow into better versions of themselves.
A story of going from good to bad.
